In today’s episode, we dive headfirst into the heated debates and pressing questions shaping our future as artificial intelligence advances at breakneck speed.

Drawing inspiration from a recent Joe Rogan conversation, we explore a provocative question: what happens to society, meaning, and individual purpose when AI makes work and basic survival obsolete?

You’ll hear why the popular vision of a utopian, abundance-filled future—where robots do all the heavy lifting and humans are free from mundane labor—might not play out as optimistically as some hope. We unpack the evolutionary wiring that compels us toward meaningful work, the existential risks of losing our sense of purpose, and the sobering lessons of the infamous “Mouse Utopia” experiments.

Alongside compelling analogies, cultural observations, and big questions about regulation, generational adaptation, and mental health, this episode offers guidance for finding purpose in an era of abundance—and warns of what might happen if we fail.

Get ready to rethink assumptions about work, happiness, AI, and the future of human fulfillment.

Energy costs to zero? Please, please, please do a deep dive on energy!! There is no such thing as clean energy and all the so-called green energies (which only produce electricity) need fossil fuels (dense cheap, but getting more and more expensive fuels) to be built and rebuilt every 20 years.

You say all this stuff with no numbers and no actually examples, one of my favourite years in recent times was Covid, and for my friends too, we enjoyed being in the garden, enjoyed playing outside, enjoyed having lots of spare time to do the things that we loved, boring work that you have to do every day does not make you feel good, I no it’s not black and white and everyone is different, some people need work but you’re talking like everyone needs to have a Job and that they will just want to go and do nothing but I’m pretty sure the data does not show that?

We already have that problem, it's called socialist programs. You have it in Europe with cookie cutter apartments for people who don't want to work to waste their life in. What need to happen for the sake of human quality of life, is that fundamental naturalistic feeling for survival. A simple thing like a bill that needs to get paid by the end of the month or maybe 3 months, is enough to create that sense of urgency to act. However we live in a world of Darwin awards, and there will still be people who will willingy choose to do nothing and get on drugs and/or bear minimum living. It would be a benifit to society that there would be a contract for those choosing to do nothing to be still involved with society though drug testing or something. And reward those who are sacraficing their free time with better cars, phones, subscriptions, ect… And it shouldn't be any different from today when full blown automation takes place.

Yeah no. Jobs are retarded. Passion and drive are NOT the same as most jobs people do for sustenance. I'm with Joe on this. Enough people would figure it out. Those who don't can pretend to work a job on some capitalistic larp Island or some shit. GTFO with your "JOBS ARE LYFE!" idiots. You all haven't heard of a hobby before?

I think there are 2 sides to the coin.

Yes we do feel the need to go out and do things, make our selves usefull otherwise it turns into depression.

On the other hand currently going to work, pending your whole life just to pay your bills then restart next day in itself creates a whole new level of depression ( whats the purpose of my life )…

So if we don't need to do the pointless grind anymore, we will actually cancel our that depression and be bale to give meaning to our life to contribute in a way we want to from the heart and not having to think about what I'm going to eat if I don't go work for that a-hole..

Productivity and having a Job aren't the same things. You have to find something to do. Nicely done Tom, and yes Rudyard isn't right about everything, but Mouse Utopia, is a bullseye.

why do you assume all human beings will just lay in bed? Thats just crazy talk. Aint gonna happen. NO we will adapt and refocus our time and energy into more enjoyable purposefull fulfilling objectives. Your so narrow minded about that. Work for me is mindless and dull.

Hey … duh… there is always something to do, the problem with most jobs is the layers of silly paper pushing and baby sitting jobs in corporate America. Before employers the only job was to survive, protect and reproduce and those jobs will be key IF the dream of AI comes to fruition. BTW so far that IF seems to be 24 months away in perpetuity. I had a dream job these last 10 years, R&D working from home, directing brilliant contractors no office politics or fluff. I had to quit and retire early (at 57) when reorgs and nepotism made my role highly desirable to some buzz word memorizing empty suit with family connections. I had been working 30+ years expecting my jobs to end like this so was ready for it, you can imagine how this motivated me to live, save and invest. It's all good, I'm very grateful to have existed in this time and place I did. Also very grateful to all my ancestors who followed smart instincts, made sacrifices and took risks. We will all be fine if we just reconnect with our hearts and stop paying attention to fake news, ads and social media. My advice for AI is be brave and trust because its a train nobody can stop now. And as always, we as a nation must win, but to win, sadly there will be losers.

I think Joe is referring to mondane jobs that have no passion. If we can all get away from survival mode, we can all find something to actually contribute or at least have basic needs covered to just chill and not cause issues

Deaf Phoenicians. Our take on words is already out of alignment, hence Babylon. Depression can simply mean deep rest of the soul. Also our self awareness allows conscience enlightenment. Those who can step away from an extreme way of logic will be capable of things supernatural. These are all belief systems and placebos. I'm not saying these evolution patterns don't happen, but that they happen because we keep saying that they can happen. We keep pushing the past into the now and continuing it through thinking. It's already in us to do the right thing and when the times come, we naturally do what needs to be done in the correct way. Presently we do not need a lot to live on but have created way too much useless stuff that now needs maintained and filtered out so we get A.I. True genuine is simplifying the complicated and in recent past it was severally inverted. Giving very few too much control. But now a level playing field is coming into view and it can look scary for those who were oppressed, creating the acting out. But we are given time to adjust and assimilate and clean up our acts to rise together. The derangement comes from not being able to be yourself to your full potential because of the control systems and limitations in place while becoming increasingly aware (Christ consciousness). Once you realize what you truly are and this place truly is in a loving way. Until then we keep coming up against that force we put on ourselves.

Great share. And I'm just putting in my two cents. good vibes here

i can see both – old and young – with a high degree of fluency (switch back and forward)……

to the resistance we need in our lives enorder to thrive – its een reflected in our biology. Your mapping of emotions/feelings has been an eye opener – a driver/ catalyst/ impetus/ incentive (or opposite).
some might recognize it in themselves in the entrepreneurial mindset, others – in service of different forms…manifesting in abundance that over flows beyond own personal needs and into the collective whole

I feel like people are divided on this topic based on how they and people they know will react to not having to work. I and the people I am closest to would thrive so I’m all for UBI and similar.
Look at trust fund babies. Some just spend their lives partying and playing video games. Others are serial entrepreneurs or spend their time travelling or applying their creativity.

AI tasks are epic. AI chaining is epic. While the result seems like it could end the world. It’s fun as as heck to learn about and test right now. Great points here. ❤ 🏄‍♂️ time to go surf

This is all true that’s why the suicidal rate is high among elderly males once they retire friends and relatives die off there’s no purpose to get up in the morning any longer. I’ve been going through this myself for the last six months very depressed.

What’s the point of having kids when the world is going to end with endless wars trying recover the last of our resources, and countries that control much of those resources are totally mentally controlled to hate the U.S.? And likely nuclear war and destruction will ultimately prevail? People like Putin are just an example of how crazy the human mind can get. And, when most women have been psyoped to never trust men or support them in any way or even listen when we try to ask questions to agree on hasty decisions they make. And to give them benefit of the doubt they are too scared to trust anyone and are pre-disposed to hate men who care most about them because they see it as a weakness when we have been trained to be honest and empathetic? What is the point of trying to learn something new when AI has automated everything you spent your life learning through MS & PhD? Why get out of bed with all this. Anyone who can get out of bed and ignore all these signals, just doesn’t understand AI well enough yet.

Extrapolating findings from rodents to humans is notoriously difficult because of vast differences in our genetics, immune systems, and brain complexity. While mice and rats share much of our DNA, biological systems differ so much that promising rodent studies fail to translate into humans over 80% of the time.Several famous studies and biological lessons highlight exactly why relying on rodent-to-human translation can be misleading:

    1. "Mouse Utopia" (Universe 25) vs. Human SocietyIn the 1960s, researcher John B. Calhoun placed mice in a closed enclosure ("Universe 25") with unlimited food and water but limited physical space. As the population grew, the mice stopped mating, neglected their young, and became highly aggressive. The Rodent Lesson: It was initially thought to prove that overpopulation causes society to collapse into a "behavioral sink" of apathy and violence. The Human Debunking: Psychologists and sociologists later discovered this does not apply to humans. Mice lack the capacity to alter their environment, regulate social roles, or use technology to cope. Humans use cognitive restructuring, privacy mechanisms, and social structures to adapt to high-density environments without automatically turning violent or ceasing reproduction.

    2. "Rat Park" and the Addiction MythIn the late 1970s, the "Rat Park" experiment placed rats in a large, stimulating environment filled with toys, social interaction, and other rats. When given the choice between plain water and morphine-laced water, the "Rat Park" rodents overwhelmingly preferred the plain water, whereas isolated rats in traditional cages drank the morphine. The Rodent Lesson: This was frequently extrapolated to suggest that addiction is exclusively caused by isolation and poor environment, and that drug rehabilitation could be solved simply by a better, "happier" surrounding. The Human Debunking: Addiction in humans is far more complex. While environment and trauma play massive roles, human addiction involves powerful genetic components, psychiatric comorbidities, and neurochemical dependence that simple social enrichment cannot override.

    3. Medical and Drug Trials (The 20% Success Rate)Rodents serve as the backbone of biomedical and pharmaceutical research, with millions used yearly in the United States. However, they are vastly less reliable when modeling human diseases.Metabolism & Systems: Rodent metabolisms are much faster than ours. A drug dosage that cures cancer or eliminates tumors in a mouse can cause catastrophic organ failure in humans.Genetic Networks: Even when sharing genes, the biological networks that link genes to diseases differ between rodents and primates. A notable example is Endostatin, which completely wiped out tumors in laboratory mice but had minimal and inconsistent effects in human clinical trials. The Immune System: Mouse immune systems, particularly in their responses to inflammation and infection, are starkly different from humans.

    4. Anatomy and Brain DifferencesRodents have smooth cerebral cortices (the brain's outer layer), whereas humans have heavily folded, complex cortices that allow for abstract thought, language, and nuanced emotional regulation. Therefore, extrapolating behavioral or psychiatric data (like fear, anxiety, or depression) from a rodent to a human oversimplifies deeply human psychological frameworks.

No…. this is NOT evolution. Bed rot is not what most do! Most low income people actually work harder (i.e. looking for a job, applying and keeping up with applying for help) i love ya Tom, but this is such an out of touch theory. If I weren't living in scarcity- i would have time in my life to contribute to the world, to add value to the world.

The mouse theory- run the rat utopia concept which is, if we live in a container that is broken, small, desperate- aka scarcity is awful. The cognitive dissonance literally broke my brain and addiction took hold of me. Chasing and paying homage to that almighty dollar is not NATURAL! NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO BE LIVING LIKE THIS. BUT…. if yiu live in scarcity its a different experience.

I think the problem is the generalization. Some people have the drive to do challenging things regardless of the reward. Some people refuse to do anything challenging regardless of the reward. I fall under the first, I climb mountains, put myself in survival type situations for fun, I build with my hands not for money but because I enjoy it. I will never run out of purpose and please give me the ability to have anything I want. I have more ambition than time and resources!!!! A world of ultimate abundance will only help facilitate my wants and dreams.

Edit: Its the generational part that probably is true unfortunately. Just look at now, soft parenting, hyper left and hyper right, DSA, Maybe we are fucked at the right timescale.

Mouse colony doesn't extrapolate to humanity because we're not mice. Mice react, humans inovate. Short of a crowd-crush mosh pit event where literal physics does the killing, people are incredibly well-equipped at handling high population density, boredome, killers and rapists, nuclear bombs, etc.
