NATIVE NEWS

A collection of art and music

Indian Country Today | October 30, 2024

Indian Country Today’s daily newscast

On the weekend edition of the ICT Newscast, we continue our Indigenous Peoples Day celebration by speaking with artist John Isaiah Pepion about his ledger art. Poet and founder of NDN Girls Book Club, Kinsale Drake, joins us in our studio for an exclusive reading. And for the 50th anniversary of hip hop, Indigenous music makers talk about the next 50 years.

Ledger art has become a popular style across various tribes. John Isaiah Pepion from the Blackfeet Nation shared the history and significance behind the art form with ICT’s Paris Wise.

Award-winning poet Kinsale Drake has spread her love of writing and literature through her organization called the NDN Girls Book Club, which has been featured in Teen Vogue. Kinsale joined us in our studio where she gave us a performance of her poem titled “Put on that KTNN.”

Moving on to more spoken word, this year marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. Indigenous rappers Moo Moo Fresh and Tall Paul reflect on their own start — and how they and other Native artists have been impacted by the music. ICT’s Vincent Moniz has this story.

We invite you to remember that around the world, Indigenous people are celebrated.

In Canada, Indigenous People’s Day is always marked by the summer solstice — while Aug. 9 is global Indigenous Peoples Day.
