Native News Online | July 11, 2026

What does America 250 mean from a Native perspective—and what comes next?

In this episode of Native Bidaské, host Levi Rickert sits down with Grace Fox (Seminole Nation), winner of the America 250: A Republic Built on Native Land National Native Youth Essay Contest, presented by Native News Online and the Aspen Institute Center for Native American Youth.

Fox discusses her award-winning essay, To Be Loved Is to Be Known, and shares why understanding America’s full history is essential to building a stronger future. The conversation explores Native identity, patriotism, historical truth, tribal sovereignty, and the role Indigenous youth will play in shaping the nation’s next 250 years.

As a tribal health care policy analyst, Fox also reflects on the challenges facing Native communities today and why truth, resilience, and Indigenous leadership offer hope for generations to come.

Thank you Levi for this wonderful discussion with Grace and I would love to read Grace’s essay but there is no link where this may be found. It brings to me memories of my Native American friend at the time addressing the curriculum advises in Australia on the true history which has and still is being misrepresented in schools throughout Australia. Thanks again and hopefully you or Grace can let me know how I can access her winning paper. John
