In my record collection the two artists that have the most of (almost all OG and lots of OGs and post and boots)are Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix and i never made the connection that Miles quoted from Jimi . Wow ! Great job and you gave a plug to my GOAT record Extrapolation ! Fantastic review I learned more than I previously knew

Oooh this is good! Can I hope for an episode on On The Corner next? I absolutely love that slab of noise and I don't know why, but it makes my brain happy.
And Happy Belated Birthday Abby!

I've been a big fan of Soft Machine's Karl Jenkins era for a while. I never got into Miles. Hearing the snippets in this video, I did not realize how much Wayne Shorter's sax sound influenced Karl's.

The Grateful Dead loved and admired Miles, but the former got the reputation of 'endless noodling' and Miles didn't. Yet this album is exactly that: endless noodling. Sure, there are some really nice bits left in the edit but there's little interaction between players (it's still the basic jazz formula of improvising over a rhythm section). The Dead may have failed more often than they succeeded but they tried to improvise collectively and they always listened to each other: a 45-second passage of coherence was not unusual. Such passages were NEVER created through later editing.
Miles Smiles is SO much better!

Miles said that The Blues did not give him enough space. He said after 12 bars, you end up in the same spot you started. He wanted more room for variation, as I recall.

My father had this record. As a kid I was fascinated by the cover photo, but I didn't get the music until I was older.

My favorite miles album is Mwandishi. I know Miles isn't on it, but it's the best. Wandering Spirit Song is the best song. Herbie Hancock is the best Miles Davis.

One of those albums that makes time stand still, that illuminates nights of introspection… my life hasn't been the same since I heard it. It brings back so many memories. And with each listen, I love it more and more. TIMELESS. 🎺❤♾️🙏🏻
Thank you Aby!!
PS: more jazz soon please🙏🏻
PS2: Speaking of centenaries, this year is also Trane's! 🎷❤♾️
And of course, the legendary Marshall Allen turned 102 and is still playing!🛸🎷🪐

Those snotty jazz purists! Miles was using rock instruments, sure, but surely no rock band a million years could make In A Silent Way or Bitches Brew.

"The sound above," interesting. I think that I think of that in terms of "transcendance"

Amazing presentation, thank you!
IASW has been a desert island album to me for a long time. That and Caravanserai (Santana).
