“Garden hermits or ornamental hermits were people encouraged to live alone in purpose-built hermitages, follies, grottoes, or rockeries on the estates of wealthy landowners, primarily during the 18th century. Such hermits would be encouraged to remain permanently on site, where they could be fed, cared for, and consulted for advice, or viewed for entertainment.”

Sounds like neither a good nor bad deal to me, it sounds like your average desk job: a pointless symbolic thing born of systemic stupidity, where you do a whole lot of nothing, but that's not really so bad.

I think these positions would have got the full 7 years if they were just slightly more lenient about talking to people. No guests, that makes sense, you're a hermit, you're supposed to be alone and contemplative. But ignoring the people who bring you food or drink? Ignoring your benefactor's guests? Ignoring the odd "disciple" you might pick up? That's just solitary confinement with a better view.
Ignoring hygiene is a dumb addition but that's rich folk for you. Need to put the poors in their place, I guess.

I could easily do the hermit thing if the rule about the nails was changed. How about instead of not cutting them, I just make sure they're really dirty looking every time I go off hermitting about the property?

I have a mildly useful garden hermit right now. He washes, associates, and can leave whenever he wants.
