Offshoring Comes for Jobs at Brass Instrument Plant & Troy Iwata Goes Sad Trombone | The Daily Show
In an age when oligarchs are maximizing profits at the expense of workers, billionaire John Paulson has stood out as a sworn enemy of offshoring American jobs. But now he appears to be singing a different tune, as Paulson’s Conn Selmer brass instrument plant is gearing up to send its operations to China. Troy Iwata meets with union leader and Conn Selmer employee Robert Hines to find out what he and his fellow workers are doing to protect their jobs from the sad trombone of unemployment. #DailyShow #Offshoring #TroyIwata #JohnPaulson

Billionaires are so smart, that if they just got rid of all workers then they wouldn't have too worry about any customers! Pay the robots?

srsly, I've played violins, celli, flutes, trombones, tubas from China and it feels so much worse–not the Chinese people's fault, it's just all sent over there geared to be not quality

Yes, nevermind the poor asians finally getting paid way less to do the same job. Americans are destined for triple the wages just because they invaded and massacred the natives hundred of years ago and continue to elect people like Trump.

There's no such thing as "American producers" and there is no "American jobs" — corporations are all international… any corp that is actually effectual on the economy, is international.

I don't get the short-sightedness of business people. If we offshore everything to China then what do we make that's valuable so that we can buy the things that China makes that we used to?

I love how the daily show pretends to be on the worker side, except they use their plant closure as comedic fodder to mock the guy to his face. Would they do the same bit about a school closing and interview a teacher and treat her the same way, mocking and belittling the value of her job?

Professional woodwind musician here: For the people that aren't in the know, the U.S. used to have MANY, MANY amazing, innovative brass and woodwind manufacturers back in the day. Elkhart, Indiana was producing some of the highest-caliber instruments in the world at their Conn, Buescher, Martin, King and Selmer USA factories. Grand Rapids, Michigan had York instruments who made some absolutely stunning quality brass. Also Cleveland for King and then East Lake. When I play a vintage American-made saxophone I feel proud that I'm playing a piece of history. I'm very sad to see ANOTHER historical American company (Conn) send their skilled trade jobs overseas.

That was just a really nice yet sad part. What I donβt understand is this: we have Steinway, BΓΆsendorfer etc in Europe. They COULD offshore to China, but the buyer would never accept that. A big part of the productβs identity is that itβs made in Germany, by German engineers and skilled workers. You can visit the factory and basically touch the materials your instrument will be made from. I imagine a trombone or tuba arenβt cheap either, so why would the consumer appreciate it? Itβs a niche market, not phones or computers. This feels like a dumb move. Much love and support for the craftsman at this factory. It would be a tremendous loss for the USA to let these skills die off.

How is it so much cheaper!?!
Thats the key. Lower quality. So instruments dont play so easily…and kids give up.
I sort of understand John Paulson.. Sales down profit down because all of your competitors have done it before you..
He should come out loud and say it on TV Im doing it because I want more for me and dont care for the workers.
