Too Big For Australia, Not Big Enough For The Rest Of The World?
This week I’m discussing Australian music, how women are held to different standards in the industry and whether a song about a narcissistic rock star was actually written about me! The Bloody Cheek of it! I also want to introduce you to an Australian musician who joined The Darkness on the road when we toured Australia and New Zealand earlier this year. So, please meet Rageflower…..
* Apologies for Maddy’s sound on this – we had a few technical difficulties…

Once again I've been introduced to some very interesting music and people. As always Justin, you are asking all the right questions and extracting all the juicy bits of information about an artist and their music.
P.S I'm extremely excited to see you and the band for the first time at Knebworth in July!

Thereβs still a music scene in Sydney?
@nickdudem
June 24, 2026 at 9:55 am
Firstup, thanks for singing happy birthday to me in Syd at the Enmore! A lot of the issue with Australian music scene is the vast majority of Aussies are super conservative and basic af. They hate anything new, and don't support local – Just look at all these comments talking about bands from the 80s…Most Aussies don't have the ears for grassroots performers, instead will stand there drinking Great Northern (shit beer) and bag out anything that doesn't sound like INXS or Cold Chisel, even though King Gizz, Airbourne or Lagerstein are far more fun.

Aussie Millennial here.. Love King Gizzard/Liz Wiz, Amy & The Sniffers, Rolling Blackouts, The Rubens, etc. When I was a kid, I didn't think Australia produced anything worthwhile, but at 12 I discovered my dad's mysterious record collection and the revelation slapped the s..t out of me. Deep in that dusty vinyl collection in that rarely accessed room we called ''old room for old stuff'' were records by The Angels, Rose Tattoo, Cold Chisel, Divinyls, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, Lobby Loyde And The Coloured Balls, Buffalo, The Saints, Radio Birdman, Midnight Oil and Skyhooks. Albert Production logo on those old Bon Scott era AC/DC records. Acca Dacca weren't just some cartoon band that used to come from Australia; they were once the products and architects of an often overlooked scene. Music that came from the unforgiving, lawless Australian pub rock scene where carpet was sticky and audiences had little tolerance for wimps. The music is unapologetically gritty and raw and I just can't go back to anything else, to be honest. AC/DC is the biggest success story and export from this period of Australian pub rock. They are to Oz Rock what The Beatles are to the Merseybeat scene; what Blondie are to the GBGB scene; what Oasis are to Britpop… You may not agree with the names I had chosen, but they're the most recognisable, let's face it…
When I hear people talk about Men At Work when referring to Aussie music, I think ''Aw, how cute! They're talking the same way I did when I was 9''.
When people talk about Kylie, same thing.
When anybody outside Australia, including you Justin (and that intro) talks about Australian music, I sit back to hear wha they have to say and more often than not I'm thinking ''wtf do you know about Aussie music? Wtf would you know about us?''…. Keep listening to ''I Touch Myself''; I'll stick to ''Boys In Town'' and the whole Desperate album, thanx

What a fairly naive Sydney-centric view. Please be aware there are huge scenes in Melbourne, Brisbane and other capital cities. Another thing is that JJJ is quite a monoculture in terms of music and there are a great many artists who never make it to Radio Play on JJJ but are played on various community radio stations. Compare. 3RRR and 3PBS both based in Melbourne

Give the Screaming Jets a listen. Tear of Thought is an absolutely world class album.

This is reflected in Southern River Band's journey as well. They've pushed hard to break through, european tours, a leg up by The Darkness as well – but theres just a gap for support for rock. Wind it back 30 years and they'd be huge.

Sydney is not the epitome of Australian music by a long shot. If you take a deeper dive e.g. an LRB, even Crowded House (though NZ origins) and many others, who hit the Int. scene long ago. Yep even Kylie.
So let's not forget the Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide scenes. We can speak of artists who broke before an INXS. And those afterwards.
For some exuberance and indulgence, Sydney (as an Int. destination) seems to procure the baulk of recognition when there where many more city music cultures ahead, who set the pathway alight.

Justin, if you can, get Jimmy Barnes on. We gave AC/DC to the world, but we kept Cold Chisel for ourselves. AC/DC, it's been said, could make the smallest pub feel like the biggest arena…but Cold Chisel could make the biggest arena feel like the smallest pub.

I could be wrong and if this is read I'd find great value in knowing if I am or not, but anyway I wanted to share my Mandelbrot for a brains thoughts to offer some unsolicited reassurance or maybe just some acknowledgement that is impossible to request and rarely given and understandably so I would think maybe you know just a credit where credit is due, I see you type thing even if I am way off track and come off as wacko, it's a risk worth taking if there even a small chance there is any positive value to be taken or otherwise……. Anyway I feel like I can see you, Justin, testing your own metacognitive ability to pull insights and make more rational and accurate predictions to get a clearer sense of understanding of someone elseβs life experience and thought process's and what ever other details you can support mentally without completely dissociating from the present moment especially if mid interview. Basically running an internal empathy infused educated probability prediction meta cognition powered simulator of someone elseβs life aka your guests that allow you to then start gathering insights and building a few theories to bring back to the present moment and check their accuracy in real time against the source material that is your guests lived experience and maybe like giving yourself little green ticks or red crosses so you know what you can reliably validate or improve upon for next time but also to help guide your line of questioning and direction for each interview and uniquely differing dynamic requirements. like I said could be wrong, would love to know if I am or not, but as far as narcissists go, if this is indeed what you're doing, it takes a profound level of self-awareness and unified control of a probably well nurtured likely powerful potential ego or so I would guess, and that in itself is a pretty impressive feat that not too many of us wind up achieving or even challenging ourselves with to start. I believe it takes some unpleasantly deep self reflection to reach witch ironically for someone who can stare at their own perfection in a mirror for hours on end in absolute awe, true inner focused self reflection is a narcs true enemy!! yeh i dunno it's there if helps i guess figuring its probably an unflattering subject to request any clarity on if it were ever needed you know so just incase i suppose i dunno, but I also enjoy testing myself if I may be honest and actually I looked into it and turns out I can be so yeh got my red and green markers at the ready π€ alrighty well peace love and may the creative muse be with us always xoxo

@King-Kazma
June 24, 2026 at 9:55 am
Some of the context missing from the talk of βrockstar egosβ is the Australian cultural cringe. There is a frontier mentality. Things are done how they are done, and we donβt like upstarts upsetting the applecart.
New Zealand calls it tall poppy syndrome. If you stick your head above all others, you might get it cut off. Best not to.
Coming to these countries involves travelling to the end of the world. In generations past, once you got here, everybody was stuck with you. This bred a culture where norms were enforced. The culture tolerates people going off the rails to blow off steam once in a while, but as a rule we donβt talk about those moments in normal everyday life.

Fortitude Valley Brisbane Queensland Australia is internationally recognized as Australiaβs largest dedicated live music precinct. Officially designated a Special Entertainment Precinct in 2006, it hosts the highest density of live performance venues in the country, ranging from the 3000 capacity Music Hall to live venues that have 350-500 capacity consistently. Sydney has nothing but night clubs.

I follow a lot of musos from Sydney. Most of them are in about 5 different bands and also do their own things too. So rotating singers, guitarists,bass players, drummers on the regular is quite common, depending whose touring with who at the time, there's no animosity about it though, they're all working hard.

Justin, we have watched through the years as your theme song morphed and developed into what you eventually settled upon, but…. there's a band from Down Under (coz in Australia we like to claim anything that's not nailed down) who started off in New Zealand called Split Enz. Now they had a song in 1980 called "I hope I Never". I think you ought to take a listen to the middle, around 1 min 30 seconds, and thank Tim for the inspiration (and not litigation). π₯

Sadly the music industry in Australia is very bias… if it's not alternative, hip-hop or metalcore you don't stand a chance!
We had so many great Aussie bands that ascertained serious success – AC/DC, The Angles, Rose Tattoo, Inxs, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, etc. when our music industry was HUGE.
Sadly nowadays we have many great rock acts – Airbourne, Southern River Band, The Poor, Rose Carleo Band, Roadkill, Black Aces, The Lazys among many others and none of these bands are known to mainstream music lovers in Australia. It's a closed shop down under…
