I cancelled my Spotify subscription at the beginning of 2025 and instead started buying albums with the money I would have spent on Spotify each month.
Now I own my favourite music that I can listen to whenever and wherever I want, and the artists I love make more money than they ever would have from me streaming their music. Also it turns out I really enjoy the process of looking for new music as well as keeping up to date with what's coming out using sites like AOTY, and I'm listening to so much great music that I'm sure Spotify would have never pushed to me. I can't recommend it enough!

    Soulless?! Nah mate.
And you just hammered on the romantic view artists have of the industry. AI is'nt there yet but it will be… soon. And it will be more creative than any human could ever wish to be. Some of the stuff that's in development is insane. It's not just about data or algorithms anymore.

As a spotify user, it is a good plattform. I love creating playlists. Before I had the app, used to semi-legally download all songs I liked and burned my playlists on CDs but that was ofc a lot of effort. But all this going on makes me feel guilty about using it

More likely than not these ai artists with a ton of listeners isn't so much a case of spotify pushing them on purpose, but more likely these accounts are used to buy streams for money laundering purposes.

I feel like you could go down So Many rabbit holes with this if he chose to also look into kpop and how That's been affecting the american music market as well

Hey Drew I know this is a long shot but would you and Julian ever consider releasing tab sheets for your music? I've been listening to Parasocial nonstop since this video came out and would love to learn how to play the songs myself (esp The Cost of Living). Anyway even if you can't, thank you for this awesome album!!

    I can proudly say that:
    – I have never subscribed to an music streaming 'service',
    – I still buy CDs, often new from the bands' websites directly (as well as merch),
    – listen to music by the album the way the artist(s) intended.
    – will never listen to AI generated music. Part of what I love about music, and art in general, is human talent and creativity – art created by AI trained on human creativity is a pale talentless facsimile.

As a band member of a band that has songs on spotify and sometimes does concerts, I can tell you the most profit you'll make as an independent musician is, when you take your guitar, sit down at a busy road and put a hat in front of you and start playing/singing. And because no big corp makes money out of that, it is illegal to do so in my country. Gotta love the modern world.

But there’s also the money of the consumer which is overseen. I’m a student. I work part time. I literally cannot afford to buy CDs. I can barely afford the Spotify student plan. I want to support the artists more directly but I simply do not have the means to do it. I mean, I have had to Afterpay school supplies on TEMU. Yes, the cheap Chinese app. Money is not easy to get when you aren’t born in the middle class. I, and likely millions of others, are trying to work their way up, but until then, we have to use what we can afford.

I’m so happy you interviewed some of the members of Dance Gavin Dance. I’ve seen that band every single time they’ve come to my city since I was 13. The change in the industry is so crazy to see as a fan. I actually just went back to find one of my old tickets and I paid $20 to see them in 2015. 🥺 crazy to think I how little profit they got from that.

what i love about drew gooden videos is you're like 10-15 minutes in and you start to worry that it's ending soon then you check and you're not even halfway there

so if they sell 10,000 tickets each band member makes $50,000 in a single month, and theyre still complaining????????????? lmfao………… what a joke. everybody is so greedy it's disgusting….

    Congratulations on your album
Industry is just money and business
    Create your art for yourself
It came from you and is for you
Generating money out of it is just bonus
Real value is the process of creating art for the artist

i finally ripped the bandaid off and canceled my spotify subscription a few months ago. I'm already paying for youtube, so paying for both was just a waste of money, not to mention spotify is supportive of genocide in palestine, and has also become enshitified

people seem to forget that for conglomerates to own everything requires that the owners sellout to the highest bidder rather than sell it cheaper to someone who will keep the original core business values….. you can't blame the buyer and not the seller too.

Man this is so great to see the obly way to "win" at capitalism is to be a parasitic service that makes the luves of everoyne worse, exclusing them. Both worse for clinets and the artists. Why do we reward things like these with money and recognition ???

If I had the ability to make one company crash and burn? Well it would have to be Nestle, but if I had the ability to make TWO companies crash and burn? Ticketmaster would fall to a glorious class-action lawsuit that sees all of us get our "service fees" redunded

I actually am ok with the way the music industry is in a selfish way. I don’t really like any new artists so wouldn’t support them anyway but I get to listen to a whole universe of old classics as much as I want as part of YouTube premium. That suits me. I feel sorry for the younger generation though, they will never have all the artists all at the same time smashing the industry now it’s just whatever’s hot for a minute on tik tok
