SLACK! : NOSTALGIA

The Tragic Reality of Salute Your Shorts

Dial-Up Days | June 18, 2026

Camp Anawanna, we hold you in our hearts…

For a whole generation of Nickelodeon kids, Salute Your Shorts feels like one of the defining shows of the early ’90s. Budnick, Donkeylips, Sponge, Dina, Telly, Z.Z., Ug, the Awful Waffle, and “Zeke the Plumber” all became permanent pieces of Nickelodeon nostalgia.

But here’s the weird part: Salute Your Shorts only lasted two seasons and 26 episodes.

So why did a show this memorable disappear so quickly? In this video, we look back at the strange story behind Salute Your Shorts — from Nickelodeon’s early live-action era, to the show’s summer camp premise, its difficult production, cast changes, budget issues, and the network’s shift toward animation with shows like Doug, Rugrats, and The Ren & Stimpy Show.

This is the story of how Salute Your Shorts became one of Nickelodeon’s most beloved shows… even though it may have been doomed from the start.

Were you watching when it originally aired, or did you discover it through reruns? And which Camp Anawanna camper were you most like — Budnick, Sponge, Donkeylips, Dina, Telly, or Z.Z.? Let me know in the comments.

I LOVED this show as well as Pete and Pete, Clarissa Explains it All and, of course, Are You Afraid of the Dark. Nicks live action shows were low key goated way back when. Also, Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple and Wild n Crazy Kids were all AWESOME game shows oh and also Nick Arcade. I used to want to be on Nick Arcade SO BAD!

Can't forget Zeke the Plumber and what color a giraffes tongue is…which was the question that had to be answered in a radio contest where they had to listen to the radio non stop until they got the question and then had to fish the change from the vent to use the collect call phone to call into the radio station

Plus for them to of kept the show going. They would have been bringing in new teenage actors too often.
I could see having the original cast end up being camp counselors and what not. That’s a way to keep them around. But the show is about the kids and not counselors.
It’s just so hard to keep a show going for a lengthy time when all the actors and actresses you are using, are going through puberty.

I'll say this, i watched this show as a kid, but the song never stuck in my head. . .
i remember the storylines, but i always thought it was meh and just watched it because that was what was on at the time.
just like Hey Dude would be on at the time and i would watch it. now, that show was completely forgettable, i don't remember a single plotline of hey dude.

    I preferred to watch nicktoons.

on a side note. i couldn't help noticing Bobby Buttnick was in Terminator 2 : Judgement Day.

also, to speculate on the "awful waffle", in the scene where they were gonna do it to someone, they someone said "I'll get the syrup!" ,so pancake syrup must be somehow involved. .I suspect what it was is just like, they poured syrup on the victim's belly, then took the the tennis racket and pressed it int so it would leave the imprint, kind of like a tattoo or brand.

and then the victim has to clean themself up, but has that "waffle" imprint for a while as a reminder.
it was likely more humiliating than painful and left the target as the butt of a joke and that was probably why it was so "awful".
It was the social stigma of having had that done to you that they feared.

You keep showing the first season's main character, but never mention him, or the main character from the second who you have shown once at this point.
Ok I guess you talk about them beginning at halfway through.

"Look around, see the world, the sun that shines above. If we don't change the way we live, we'll be covered in ROTTING PUKING GARBAGE! TOXIC WASTE! OIL SPILLS! IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!"

That recycling episode still remains my favorite and a core memory, especially at the end when Budnick is the only one still expecting to go to the water park.

The cast dynamics really changed between season 1 and season 2. Michael had the air of the "straight man," the normal kid who somehow got thrown in the mix with a bunch of weirdos. Pinsky, on the other hand, knew he WAS one of those weirdos and was determined to own it. Michael was constantly being screwed over and put in awkward positions by Budnick's schemes, whereas Pinsky was too slick for Budnick to scheme, and in fact was just as often the one doing the scheming. Although that did make Pinsky feel like less of the "main character" than Michael was.

I think it's because I was a Boy Scout that I was partial to the camping aspect of this show. I always remember this being part of a block of four shows, including Clarissa Explains it all, Fifteen, and some other high school based skit show that I can't remember the name of. I never really watched reruns beyond its initial airing so I'll always remember it having a fairly short run.

Crazy that a show like Welcome Freshman, I know I watched but don't remember it at all, still had twice has many episodes as Salute Your Shorts. I swear I thought that lasted way longer

I loved this show! I had no idea it only had 26 episodes until you just told me. That's crazy! I loved all the characters and of course the theme song! Iconic!!!
