Why Do I Love These VICIOUS Queens?

Matt Baume | June 6, 2026

I just watched this new show called Mid-Century Modern. It’s about a group of older gays living together and it’s been billed as The Gay Golden Girls. And to be honest … I didn’t love it. But it got me thinking about another show, from ten years ago, called VICIOUS. It’s about these horrible people who say and do horrible things to each other. And it’s one of the coziest love stories I’ve ever seen. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around why I have such warm feelings for this show. What is it that makes VICIOUS so special?

I'm one of those Americans that love Vicious. Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi are British stage royalty. They've been friends for decades and you can feel it. Fabulous and touching series. The other characters are fantastic as well. I highly recommend it.

Me and my now deceased husband loved this show! Being catty and making each other laugh by throwing shade was our love language. We were so comfortable with our love for each other, the barbs were just being witty.

I am a queer person (27) and I am so thankful, that I have the privilege to live in a place and time, where I am allowed to enjoy the life that was built by those who came before us.
I was 18 years old when gay marriage was legalised in my country. I remember the discussions I had to witness by my family. I was in the closet back then, because my own mother threatened to make life of every homosexual in her presence a living nightmare – yes, especially if the person was her daughter.

But I want to end on a sweeter note. My grandma studied in the late 1950s and lived with two wonderful roommates. One was aromantic-asexual, the other lesbian. They stayed friends till they died, phoned each other about once a week and her roommates became the guardians of her two daughters.

What I want to say with this is: there have always been queer people and if you were decent enough, they confide it to you. And there were always decent people somewhere!

Thank you! Mid-century modern was horrible to watch and I really expected so much more. A total waste of a good name and actors on the other hand ILOVE Vicious.
