Killer whale. Demon barrel. Hell creature from hell. Orcas have earned one of the most infamous reputations in the animal kingdom but is it fair? Dive into the complicated history of orcas, from their first written description by a Roman scholar in the first century AD, to their evolutionary origins as small fish-eating dolphins, to the moment they decided to put blue whales on the menu.
Meet Old Tom, the orca who hunted alongside human whalers in Australia, learn about the salmon hat trend that swept three pods in 1987, and find out why two orcas off South Africa are single-handedly collapsing a coastal ecosystem all for shark liver. With 200+ species on the menu, grief that lasts 17 days, dialects passed down through generations, and a body count of zero humans in the wild, orcas might be the most human-like animal on Earth. And that might be exactly what makes them so terrifying.

Us assuming all killer whales are psychopaths because one likes to play hacky sack with a dead animal is kinda like Aliens thinking all humans are gay serial killers just because they heard that Jeffery Dahmer guy used to go to bars to pick up dudes so he could keep them in his crawlspace forever.
They even have their own self destructive tik tok trends. It's also kinda funny thinking that if they were smart enough to study US they'd might end up calling us "Killer Monkeys".
Also also also REALLY fucking cool how both orca whales and the orcs from lord of the rungs get their name from the roman god/underworld "Orcus" (Rome's version of hades)

As a preteen my parents sent me to a day camp at an off-brand sea world where I was in the pool with their dolphins doing a bit where I was the trainer giving hand sign commands and in hindsight I remember this and am like… that's definitely a canon event, but WTF were we thinking!

Orca are the scariest creature to me on the planet. Because they are Comparable to humanity only 30 feet long and weigh multiple tons.
I love them so much

A "C" is always hard in Latin. "Ae" is "eye". "I" is "ee", "e" is what Fonzi says…."ayyyy". Also in Latin. "Jehovah" behind with an "I".

Is it really worth it for an orca to est just the liver of a shark? That does not seem "natural" but rather like them just being great hunters that can afford to be picky eaters. It's ike me ordering a meal then eating just the part I want a throwing the rest into the trash.
@Fenriswaffle
May 19, 2026 at 1:41 pm
If nothing else, the fact that they have that level of intelligence along with that level of power and there is not a single documented case of a wild Orca killing a human (that we know of) should tell us plenty of their restraint and nature.
The fact that the few deaths recorded are all from Orca in captivity (3 from 1 of them) should tell us plenty on how they feel about captivity.
In all honesty, I try to avoid black and white (aah the irony of Orca coloring…) but I feel similarly about any animal that venture long distances during its normal life, captivity is just not for them. Especially if they're highly intelligent. I feel similar about Elephant, note how often zookeepers get injured or killed by them, and what proportion of them suffer from significant mental issues. This is not to shit on zoos, I still fully believe in their benefits in a number of areas, just some animals do worse than others in captivity…and its pretty obvious at this point that Orca and Elephant are among them.

It's always interesting how Orcas are the Devils of the sea and Elephants are the gentle giants of the savannah, i feel like for humans the distortion through the water surface is much more emotional than it is optical, like watching everything down there through the lense of thalassophobia until we manage to drag it into our own safe spaces and watch it suffer the same fate we do in it. I hope society can find ways to generate the empathy they need to care for other species, or even just its own individuals, without mincing them through the process of social gaze and deconstruction to determine if they are worth it, there must be better ways to understand value than it's destruction.
@Semoremx
May 19, 2026 at 1:41 pm
I think it's really interesting how, a lot of the time, the more intelligent and "human-like" an animal is, the more we villify it. Happens with dolphins and orcas and I'm sure there are other examples.

Isn't the act of orcas offering humans prey just another trap like the snippet in this same video of them fishing for birds using bait?

I must correct you on the point of "Gay Whales". This is a decades-old thing, and is a misguided "Appeal to Nature" fallacy. In our current culture, it is used to justify homosexuality as "natural", just like the error people made which is widely recognized as such that "Nature abhors homosexuality" because it does not result in offspring and is detrimental to the population growth of a species. In reality, no animal is really "gay" with the exception of humans who operate under a unique set of rules. Yes, we are "different", like it or not. Anyway, the "homosexual" behavior is usually instinct-driven (Male cattle mounting other male cattle because their instincts tell them to hump, but no females are present and they don't know what to do.), a case of mistaken identity (Male frogs and toads trying to mate with other male frogs because instinct and sex drive goes awry (Toads and some other amphibians have even evolved a "release call" that females don't make to try and combat this.)), pair-bonding malfunctions in birds that mate for life resulting in "gay" bird pairings with both animals stuck bonded and trying to act out mating behavior with a partner which never works (and that sounds very sad, imo. Another example is imprinting in chicks who think anything they see after hatching is their mother.), and then you have smarter animals like chimps and dolphins basically masturbating with each-other because they have no shame and it feels good, but which will quite happily mate with their opposite-gendered counterpart whenever they can. So sorry, no, the whales aren't gay, they are just animals who don't even have a concept of homosexuality, and anyone telling you otherwise is pushing an agenda and misrepresenting science. This is entirely decoupled from the human politics surrounding homosexuality, unless someone is trying to misinform you for a personal reason or heard something they don't understand and is repeating it for a similar reason. Toss that out.
