EXPLAINER: The role Trump plays in the 2026 Midterms despite not being on the ballot
President Donald Trump may not appear on ballots this fall, but his political influence is showing up in a major way across the country.
For a deeper breakdown of how this is playing out, viewers can watch our full video explainer on The National News Desk’s YouTube channel.
In state after state, a growing number of Republican candidates winning their primaries share a common thread: they’ve been endorsed by President Trump. This week’s results underscored just how powerful that backing can be, not only shaping individual races, but potentially influencing the path to the midterms and even how political maps are drawn nationwide.
Nowhere was that more evident than in Indiana.
Several Republican state senators who had opposed Trump on a key issue, redistricting, lost their primaries to Trump-backed challengers. Of the seven races where Trump issued endorsements, at least five challengers won, one incumbent held on, and one race remained too close to call.
Those outcomes highlight a growing connection between primary politics and the fight over redistricting, the process of redrawing congressional and state legislative district boundaries. While typically done once a decade following the U.S. Census, those maps can influence elections for years by determining how voters are grouped and which party may have an advantage.
That’s why this issue extends far beyond Indiana.
Over the past year, Trump has encouraged Republican-led states to revisit and redraw district maps, even outside the traditional timeline, with the goal of strengthening the party’s position in Congress.
Texas moved early, adopting new maps projected to add five Republican seats in the U.S. House. Although a panel of federal judges initially blocked the maps, the Supreme Court later allowed them to be used in the 2026 midterms.
