Buckskin is one of the oldest Native American women’s dance styles and is characterized by elegance, grace, and smooth, flowing movement. Dancers wear finely crafted buckskin dresses adorned with intricate beadwork—fully beaded yokes in the Northern style and accented or appliqué beadwork in the Southern—along with beaded moccasins, elaborate jewelry, and fringed shawls carried over one arm. Accessories may include long bone-pipe breastplates, beaded hair pieces, and, for some, ceremonial beaded crowns. The dance is slow and poised, with subtle swaying, knee bends, and gentle bobbing to the drum that sets the leather fringe, shawls, and purses in graceful motion.
Ladies Cloth is a traditional Native American women’s dance with both Northern and Southern styles, practiced by tribes such as the Kiowa, Osage, Ponca, Sioux, and Crow, and is marked by slow, graceful movement similar to Women’s Buckskin. Regalia varies by tribe but typically includes a long cloth or wool dress with open sleeves, a contrasting wrap at the hem, partially beaded high-top moccasins, and a two-sided breastplate. Additional elements include a beaded or concho belt with a drag, functional pouches, and accessories such as scarves, chokers, fans, purses, and shawls, creating a dignified and visually elegant expression of Native culture.
