From the garage rock revival of the early 2000s to arena-filling, Grammy-winning success, The Black Keys have carved out a unique place in modern music. Created in a basement in Akron, Ohio, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney built a career on a raw, blues-infused sound that felt both timeless and immediate. They are one of the last big rock success stories of their era.
But their journey is more than a tale of musical triumph. It is also filled with feuds, insults, and burned bridges. From a long-running rivalry with Jack White to public spats with pop stars, classic rock legends, brands, and even streaming services, The Black Keys have a knack for conflict. Are they misunderstood blunt Midwesterners in a fake-smile industry, or rock’s most confrontational band with a chip on their shoulder the size of Ohio?
The story begins in Akron in 2001. Auerbach had a gig but his band did not show, so he asked neighbor Patrick Carney, who was supposed to be recording, to play drums. They recorded a demo in a few hours and realized they had something special. They called themselves The Black Keys, inspired by a local outsider artist who used the phrase “black keys” for people who were not quite right. Their early albums, like The Big Come Up and Thickfreakness, were raw, lo-fi, and critically adored.
From the start, comparisons to The White Stripes followed them. Both were Midwestern guitar-and-drum blues-rock duos, and the press loved the narrative. Jack White drew lines in interviews, and rumors swirled when The Black Keys moved to Nashville. Things exploded when leaked emails from White’s divorce revealed harsh words about Auerbach and accusations of copying. Patrick Carney called the situation embarrassing but sympathized with White’s private comments being exposed. Later, a tense encounter in a New York bar led Carney to claim White tried to start a fight, before both sides publicly made peace.
Carney’s outspoken nature fueled other feuds. When asked about Justin Bieber not getting Grammy nominations, he replied that Grammys are for music, not money, and that Bieber was already very successful. Bieber fired back on social media, and his fans flooded Carney with insults. In later interviews, Carney did not soften his stance, further cementing his reputation as someone who speaks his mind regardless of the fallout.
The band also criticized posthumous Michael Jackson releases as a label-driven move, joked about ICP’s fanbase, and stayed off streaming services for years to protest low payouts. Eventually, they joined streaming platforms but remained critical of the model. More recently, a poorly handled arena tour, disputes with management, and a controversial “America Loves Crypto” performance led them to speak out against what they see as a consolidated, billionaire-driven industry.
So why do The Black Keys seem to fight with everyone? Part of the answer is Patrick Carney’s unfiltered candor. Part of it is the long shadow of the Jack White feud, which pushed them into a defensive posture early on. And part of it is their growing frustration with a music business they view as exploitative. Through it all, they have clung to a stubborn sense of authenticity, even when it costs them allies.

The White Stripes or The Black Keys? Also, is Jack White the human form of Billy Corgan’s Zero shirt?

Hot take: The White Stripes' best songs were better, but The Black Keys have FAAAAAAR more good songs.
ALSO, music is better when musicians are rivals, even if they're also friends. White Stripes vs Black Keys had the same vibe as Nirvana vs Guns N Roses

I’m from Nashville and was pretty tapped into the music scene there for a long time. Dan and Patrick had pretty rotten reputations. Heads all the way up their own assholes. Pretentious, self-absorbed, overly confrontational. It’s more than a few snafus with various other musicians, it’s a personality problem.

It’s so hilarious when modern blues musicians think they invented the subgenre by playing the exact same music that was developed 150 years ago. 😂.

To start with: the drumming is mediocre to weak, no bass player is a bad idea that even the finest musicians don't do very well, & altho the distorted vocals work they are not enough to make a band. Boom, for real.

Patrick Carney is basically Fred Durst- a marginal talent that got extremely lucky.

The keys were the SHIT all the way up to turn blue. Bands always have their time and when its done its done unfortunately. They will always have huge fans and put out good songs every so often. As an example Aerosmith put out a few hits in the 90s but who would call them a 90s band? Ozzy put out music until he died but his era was the 70s – 80s. The sound was developed in certain climate, specific place in time.

I wonder how the Flat Duo Jets felt about these two bands feuding over a sound they knew was not their own in the 80s as a two piece blues rock band.

The White Stripes built a career on aping other peoples music. I don't understand how JW can say any of that shit. Huffing your own farts gives you brain damage.

I'm gonna side with the Black Keys on all these controversies. Jack White is a brilliant artist, but also a narcissistic, emotionally incontinent Karen who provoked and maintained the drama between the bands. Beyond this, the Black Keys are simply a better band, and won't apologize for it- Midwestern Style.

Pizza Hut was here before the black keys and Pizza Hut will be here after the black keys. While those guys are being buried into the dark soil at their poorly attended funerals, happy families all across the world will be enjoying great pizza, crunchy butter crust, zesty tomato sauce and hot melting cheese. Also, so many toppings, very generous. Praise be to Pizza Hut.

May 9, 2026 at 7:50 pm
Let's be honest. The reason for the low ticket sales that led to them canceling their 2024 tour is that their previous 3-4 albums up to that point sucked so much that they lost a big chunk of their fan base who had given up on them. When you build your career on authentic, soulful, bluesy garage rock, become critically and commercially successful, and then end up becoming soul-less, streamlined, corporate radio butt rock, there are going to be consequences. Yes, their criticism of the modern music industry and touring mechanism is more than valid. But they also did a bit to themselves with how far they fell off artistically.

Both the white stripes and the black keys suck. But I’d pick the white stripes because they have the better drummer.
