The Oklahoma Feather Dance, commonly known as the Fancy Dance, is one of the most popular styles seen at modern powwows and is a pan-tribal form that originated in Oklahoma as the Fancy War Dance through the Hethuska Society, credited to Gus McDonald. The regalia is highly vibrant and coordinated, featuring extensive loom-beaded sets such as suspenders, belts, cuffs, headbands, and armbands, often paired with large, color-matched feather bustles made with dyed hackles. Additional elements typically include Cheyenne-style beaded moccasins, sheep bells and angora anklets below the knees, decorated wool aprons and side drops, chokers, necklaces, ribbon shirts, and a porcupine-hair roach with two feathers on a rocker. Dancers carry fans and whistles, and the dance itself alternates between a steady drum-circling step and fast, athletic contest footwork with spins and vertical motion, emphasizing energy, precision, and visual impact.
