What Does It Mean To Be An Alpha Male? – How The Role Of Alpha Has Changed Over Time

I really only selected this video based on the curiosity that the 'alpha' male does not exist as it was once described. The original scientists who had observed and denominated alpha behaviours discovered very shortly afterwards that, in fact, various animals take turns to be the alpha. (They saw this after watching the animals for longer periods.) The media was so delighted with the sensationalism of the first view that they mostly ignored the corrected view.
I presumed that this channel's author would be one who likes to delve deeply into conceptions. I was wrong.
However, I find the idea of people taking turns at leadership- each taking time to recover and get along with daily lives between leading, and giving over to different leaders to suit different situations- fascinating. I would love to see this played out in the traditional workforce. I also have seen, in past observations, that when you give leadership to different people (especially if they don't yet feel qualified in the role- which is what is seen in women more often than men) you often see them blossom into the role. The weight of responsibility incentivises them to rise to the role.

Wisdom is alpha.

Unfortunately this video presents a view of the nature of social animals that it is archaic and completely out of date. Anthropologists, evolutionary psychologists, and zoologists have all moved on to the view that the 'alpha' of a social group is not at all self serving or violent or lacking compassion. Additionally there is often a spectrum from alpha down to the other end of the social role spectrum. In general among chimpanzees, bonobos, wolves, and Homo sapiens the individual (or individuals) who are elected to the alpha role are the one's most responsible for resolving conflict, providing leadership and wise decisions, displaying compassion for those who suffer, and giving the group a sense of safety and security through their leadership examples.The role is very rarely used as a way to create more offspring. In wolf societies there are two alphas – one male and one female – and the rest of the pack is composed mainly of their children. The female alpha very often provides a stronger leadership role and decision making than the male. In bonobo and often ancient homo sapien societies the alpha is a female.

And one more thing – The statement that some humans are 'lesser ancestors' is extremely racist and disturbing. Only our completely personal and subjective and arbitrary value systems can allow us to look at one group of humans and say that they are 'lesser' than another group of humans. Very disturbing and imperialistic way of thinking….
