Why People Like Getting Uncomfortably High – Drugs, Alcohol, & Escaping The Self

Pursuit of Wonder | February 11, 2026

What does the popularity and long history of drugs and alcohol say about the human condition? What is the appeal of losing control over one’s self and submitting to an altered state of being? We must either be looking for something we don’t have, or trying to escape from something that we do.

FUCK being new. Why the fuck do we care at all? I completely understand the reason beyond us wanting to do something? But.. the REAL QUESTION IS.. WHY?

Funny. Drugs for me, or at least to be more specific marijuana, forces me to face myself more than if I'm sober. That it is why I'm slowing down. It is like I'm in front of a mirror all the time without a chance of turning my head to the other side. It is uncomfortable and desperating at times mostly when I'm around strangers but it can also allow me to see clearly what before was a blur. So I don't agree that drugs will only make you scape from yourself. You can't. And that is why we ain't never gonna be free.

Really Biased point of view, half true, you can and people do (and i have) done drugs as a form of habit, adiction , escapism, BUT, under the umbrella word that "drugs" is, and the kinds of drugs that exist, it would be wrong to asume that all altered states of conciousness are negative or that they dont have nothing positive to offer (within reasonable use) , Im talking about

psychedelics and the personal rigth/ responsability of using any substance ON MY BODY, for my personal and spiritual use.
