Lewis Black Goes Off on Gen Z’s Retro Love for Smoking, Tramp Stamps & the Mall | The Daily Show
Lewis Black takes on Gen Z’s nostalgic penchant for the past and the ridiculous “throwback” fads the younger generation is reviving, including cigarette smoking, “dumb phones” to help them think thoughts, tramp stamps, and the mall. #DailyShow #LewisBlack #GenZ

If one look at Netflix for instance, very popular with GenZ'ers, there seems to be a pronounced tendency for 'thank you for smoking'-scenes in series, often very 'conveniently' set in the 1970-'80's, when lung cancer wasn't an issue. I thought by the way that there was an agreement with film studios not to show smoking anymore, but that doesn't seem to apply to Netflix series apparently?

Living through a reasonably avoidable "once in a lifetime event" every year for the past decade of one's young adult life will turn anyone into a chain smoker.

Gen Z here. Me and my friends were smoking and going to the mall like 7 years ago. How is this a new trend? I thought that’s just what you were supposed to do as a teenager.

I actually think bringing back smoking is a net positive for our society. Setting aside the obvious health risks that come with smoking, people just need something to chill them out. We’ve focused too much on health that we’ve all turned into neurotic freaks that get anxious about everything. We’re all going to die eventually, might as well chill, smoke a few darts, and enjoy a glass of wine. People will be happier and less neurotic.

Maybe folks need to revisit why their presentation of the realities of smoking wasn’t so convincing to the people they were talking down to

That's not about the past, it is the cool factor. GenX rarely cared about the boomers. Aside from the hippie era. GenX had cool stuff, great stereo systems at home or in cars. The clothings of the 80's was something else.😂 and the Big hair era. The music of the 80's MTV, gadgets, cd, vhs, then dvd. People could show off with something. Now it like look at my phone, the same as an other 500 million people. A manly stereo could shake the windows in the house and you could hear it a block away. There was real night life on the weekends. GenZ is short changed. The 80's were simplier times, but there was always some excitement im the air.

It's not just Gen Z and it's not just these old fads that we are embracing, we are buying Blu Rays, DVDs, CDs and their physical media players so we can watch the content we want without chasing it down on some streaming service that feels entitled to our money while not paying the artists making the content.
We are tired of owning nothing, we are tired of new trends without feeling, and it's hilarious that old people who experienced these trends finger wagging at younger generations instead of basking in the knowledge that they lived in better times and the young people are trying to bring those times back with inexpensive technology.
Steaming services, fast fashion, and AI all mean that there is very little or no used market for anything that wasn't created pre-housing crash.
America never recovered from the Great Recession, Millennials and Gen Z know it because we live it.
