WATCH: Great Lakes Mariners Memorial marks 50 years after the Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy
Great Lakes Maritime Academy holds the 50th annual Mariners Memorial service to remember and honor mariners who have perished on the Great Lakes and oceans.
Monday, November 10, 2025, marks 50 years since 29 mariners lost their lives aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald in what would become one of the most famous American wrecks of all time.

There were so many services this year with it being the 50th anniversary for the Fitz. Please put these online every year, no matter the circumstances. . . Thank you.

Why didn't they play Gordon's song?

Instead of nonsensical days given over to honor foolishness lets have a "Edmund Fitzgerald" day to honor all those who sail the dangerous Great Lakes.

Very nice ceremony, with the children in attendance very quiet and respectful. But there were two people in their 20s messing with the microphone needlessly, which was very disrespectful. Then the guy next to the building acting like a spy or something with his stupid camera. He had "liberal" written all over him.

More guys names messed up. This is so embarrassing dude especially on the 50th anniversary. And the fact nobody tries to correct him is shameful

Joseph Mazes, a crew member, told family that Captain McSorely scared him because he would never pull out of a storm and put the ship in conditions no one would ever think of.

Thinking of all the families and dear friends impacted by this tragedy. My mother is an Ashtabula, Ohioan, and we especially carry in our hearts the two sailors from Ashtabula. May all the mariners from the Fitz rest in peace for the remainder of all time. 😢

The song Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald great way to honor 29 lives in 1975 rip Gordon Lightfoot wrote the song with families permission

Funny how in talking about "the lessons of this loss," no one talks about greed in the raising of the load line, which reduced the ship's clearance in the water.

All but four would be long dead now. a couple guys might be in nursing homes, in their 80s and 90s, and the four would be in their low 70s and retired…
