Join Chris Jones and I as we–two diehard Warrant fans–discuss our history with Jani Lane. We talk about how we got into Warrant, what separated them from other acts of the time, and our experiences meeting and hanging out with Jani Lane. We discuss watching Warrant’s rise to hair metal stardom, and their sudden fall from grace with album #3, Dog Eat Dog. We delve into Warrant’s later and darker albums, discussing how Jani’s lyrics and his alcohol problem seemed to grow more desparate with each release. And, finally, we discuss his tragic death, and how we handled the loss of one of our musical heroes. Jani really was the best lyricist and vocalist from the "hair metal" genre. I'm 33 and my dad introduced me to all these bands when I was 12. Still listening to them.

Most artists end up not liking their biggest song. It's not the song they dislike (or they wouldn't have recorded it) it's how that song overshadows all their other songs that makes artists dislike their biggest hit. So I don't think Jani actually hated Cherry Pie. He hated the reaction to the song.

I really appreciate the amazing stories, but there’s something unsettling about how open Jani was in an industry where self-protection is key to survival. Letting your guard down like that isn’t always healthy, especially as a star. Sadly, the way this story ends is eerily similar to Phil Lynott’s from Thin Lizzy—another artist who was friends with everyone but himself.

Jani is a legend. Thank You for sharing your stories. My fav Warrant record is Dog Eat Dog…still fresh today. I missed an opportunity to see Warrant live at an Air Force base my half brother working at the time. I wish I went.

I grew up in St. Petersburg Florida. I was lucky enough to see Warrant on dirty rotten tour 3 times. First time I believe it was a double headliner bill with blue murder. I think it was 89? I saw them again in Tampa at the Sundome with Kingdom Come as co-headliners. I was also at the Big Talk video shoot at the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg. I think that’s the same show where they recorded Dirty Rotten live? I saw the Dr. Feelgood tour at the bayfront center and Warrant was supposed to open but ended up not playing. I bought a bootleg shirt with the Crue on the front and warrant on the back in the parking lot because the shirts were printed before they left the tour. I was 13 and 14, these shows heavily influenced my life going forward. They were such an amazing live band. They would go to the local rock club after these shows and party with the fans. What a place in time.

I love dog eat dog. I like some songs on ultraphobic and Belly to Belly. I just prefer dog eat dog and the first two albums. But strong now is an amazing song.

I love Warrant and Jani in particular. One of my favorite song writers and performers. Saw him @ Target Center, Mirage, place on hwy 55..and Salida Ent Center in Big Lake. Rip Jani…I snook in backstage at one show. Ate some backstage food and saw bare boobs

saw warrant (with firehouse and la guns) at a casino in 2002. great show. they got snowed in and came to hang out at the bar. Jerry asked me for a cigarette. Jani was getting wasted at a blackjack table with a blonde on his lap. Erik had the flu.
