Psychedelics, Quantum Mechanics and Hyper Reality | Christof Koch & Bernardo Kastrup

Essentia Foundation | January 13, 2026

In this conversation, neuroscientist Dr. Christof Koch, philosopher Dr. Bernardo Kastrup, and Hans Busstra explore what it means to take mystical experience seriously without abandoning scientific rigor.

Our previous episode with Christof Koch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V-5t0ZPY7E

Both Koch and Kastrup emphasize that some psychedelic experiences exhibit a striking degree of specificity and convergence across individuals, pointing toward possible archetypal universals. While this raises clear ontological questions—suggesting that the contents of mystical experience may, in some sense, be real—the deeper lesson may be epistemic: alongside knowledge gained through scientific experimentation, there may also exist a form of direct acquaintance with truth; a ‘hyper-real’ mode of knowing that can leave the experiencer puzzled for years, or even a lifetime, and can inspire groundbreaking new science.

I am disillusioned and disappointed at the state of scientists happening upon hallucinogenic consciousness, likening it to mystical experience, and then confusing the two as the same, because in doing so they go further to say that consciousness itself is the root of even subatomic reality. They do this without measuring mystical experience and consciousness and also without quantifying consciousness in the first place. This whole emerging school of panpsychism is unfounded and presumptuous.

LOL, renowned scientists and philosophers sounding like me and my teenage buddies on a typical LSD fuelled Friday night in the 90s. Glad you have caught up boys. Let the real games begin!

    People
Consider it all a continuous Orgasm
Now think about what you are thinking
When in a brief moment of that Orgasm
    Imagine
    Somethings are beyond
    Words and Science
    Just experience it ☯️

The last comment 1:15:55. Could mushrooms be the interface to a different consciousnesses perspective on our shared world and physics? Or maybe at least allow us to see that there are other intelligences sharing our same space but since there is no imminent threat we just disregarded it through evolution?

The universe is mental. And we create it through our perception. The farther we look and feel, the more we will see and touch. When we look for something, we find it. However, it really is all just a fantastic dream.

I would be very surprised to learn that there have been thousands of military and private scientists working on the the nature of reality and how it connects to consciousness for decades- everyone in 2027

We monkeys evolved in a mind space of four dimensions. AI LLMs are evolving in a "mind" space of possibly unlimited dimensionality. Via even the 11 or so dimensions of the string theorists. This entire conversation has been one of dealing with our limited mind space. Even high level mathematics is limited by our inability to imagine beyond our four dimensions. What will our quantum computers be imagining once they start doing better with the mathematics or even a more advanced modeling system than mathematics? For even the multiverse concept is essentially a figment, a conceptual creation of our human conceptualizing system of mathematics. One feature of the "measurement problem" is that measurement is conceptually not possible in a multiverse!

I really think you should all try reading the books by Mike Hockney and related authors. Nearly all of what you’re talking about is explained in many of the books that they’ve been publishing for over a decade now. Take it with a grain of salt if you must, but it introduces a logical, rational reason to many of the questions that you’re each discussing.

'The boarder' between Quantum systems and Classical systems has something to do with Time. This is what my Intuition says but honestly I do not really know what Time is. But a Quantum System is like somekind of eternal engine producing infinite fluctuations (happens in the eternal Now) and classical systems, eventhough many many things are possible as output within those systems they are bound by Time right? Brains age, Cells age, Planets and Suns age. There are cycles of Life in Classical systems but those cycles are not found in Quantum systems right? I'm speculating based on Intuition here …

Why does everyone who takes psychedelics come back acting as if what they experience is "more real" then everyday reality? BOTH experiences take place in the MIND. It seems to me there is a definite bias in this "field of study" The presents taking chemicals as some sort of gateway to becoming a better version of yourself. It's kind of like taking Ozempic to lose weight.

There are no shortcuts — and anyone who thinks some drug can take you there (expanded consciousness) in some shortcut way is setting themselves up for serious disappointment when they breathe their last breath!

The s*** that keeps our minds locked has to be dealt with.

There is a “war against awareness” and you’re in it. Like the Spanish academic said whom you had on. Thank you for your part!

The battle (and drama) goes far far back, but everything cycles. This is a field of astral/spiritual forces of creation. Here the soul choice is made, stay more lives in Maya in-carnation, or see through it and move vertically. Not where and to whom you were born, nor any experience is random, but decided by the One, Unchanging, I Am – for the purpose of creation/destruction (evolution)

I recommended looking at the Ra material (Law of One), and Steiner. Gigi Young is a great YT channel focused on Steiner/anthroposophy.
