Playing it again after about 25 years, im astounded by how brilliant it is, since i played as a child, ive built a 64 mil 324 unit building, gotten 2 degrees, traveled accroas country, and yea…my mind is still blown at the complexity of this game

Wasn't the OG sim city out around the same time? Dont get me wrong, RCT is way better, but it wasnt the only sim/sandbox type game out, just one of the best if not the best.
Hell, openrct2 is one of the best games around to this day, and still being worked on.

My best friend when I was 10 or so had a blast playing one of the sequel games. One time we found a guy with a full bladder and trapped him on an island in a lake with a bathroom that cost $10 to use but he didn’t have enough money, so he just wandered around with a full bladder until we put him out of his misery by dropping him into the lake.

I wouldn't say it was the first game of it's kind. There were, in fact, plenty simulation games before rollercoaster tycoon in several platforms, even theme park ones (a quick Google search will show you that). There were tho not as accesible or easy to learn. I think the biggest feat and innovation of this game was more the ease of accessibility and the mainstream appeal than it being actually innovating on gameplay features. A huge part of that is the fact that it was cheap to get, even free in promotions like the cereal box you mentioned. It basically created the foundation for a whole genre of simulation/managerial videogames that's still a bastion of creativity and ingenuity, specially on PC, with games like cities skylines, RimWorld or even Stardew valley owing some of their success to it

Loved the full coding explanation, im like the only trans woman i know who can't code so i appreciated the lesson and the metaphor, a coder ex of mine did introduce me to the Hello World coding teaching example (and now i finally get why Hall 9000 randomly says Hello World in the Epic Rap Battles Steve Jobs vs Bill Gates)
