This Aurora Performance Is Incredible.

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | December 27, 2025

I had never heard of Aurora before today. My producer suggested I take a look at this live performance of her singing “Churchyard”. A few of you have also mentioned Aurora in the comment section, so it seems apt that I take a look at her work.
Here is a link to the performance: https://youtu.be/P_XguuxLo10

since you compared her to bjork a bit, you would be delighted to know that bjork was actually in the audience for this performance 🙂 they've met several times, to my knowledge aurora has never named her as a specific influence, but expressed delight at getting to meet her, so i assume she must like her music.

edit: also she's not ad-libbing anything. everything in this performance is part of the studio track, she just pulls some backing vocals into the front when she sings live. the repeated non-lexical singing is exactly that..non-lexical. it's not in Norwegian, it's a fantasy language that she invented which she uses in a few songs (Forgotten Love and A Different Kind of Human also feature it), the "words" don't actually have any translation and she describes them as being feelings-based, so it's essentially non-lexical, just with an extra cool factor, haha

also also, i wonder if the "being barefoot makes me feel more grounded" comment you're referring to might have been Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine? she has in fact said in interviews that she prefers to be barefoot because she feels more grounded, but she has a developmental disorder called dyspraxia which can disrupt motor skills and spatial awareness, so it actually makes sense for her (especially when female pop singers are usually expected to wear heels, which are even harder to move in).

Generally a reaction is about the artist not the host! A reaction was what I expected but instead I received a waste of time. Had I not already known how much of a genius Aurora is, I would have missed out on discovering her due to your constant annoying interruptions. My reaction. Less you, and more the artist you are reacting to.

Aurora makes very cool music, it's our little Enya on Adderall and we love her. That "herrah-herroh" thing doesn't mean anything in Norwegian. It's just some neat little hook she's come up with, I guess.

Thankyou Justin. i remain undecided about her – her voice is amazing, absolutley stunning . But she enjoys the weird a bit too much and i find that tedious. You may want to check out her doing Rasbutin – (Bony M cover) that is pretty damn fine. and her singing with Einar from Wardruna – that's some good stuff. Edit : – a year later or so . and clearly at that time i wasn't ready for her. Now i can't get enough.

the part that you thought was ad-lib could be the language that she invented when she was little, she said it is the beast way for her to express her thought

Your producer is great and honestly Churchyard is amazing it's one of my favorites, Jesus fuck give em a raise

Unfortunately lyrically she did mean that he said she should be in a graveyard. He told me I could walk away but i wouldn't get far….

Further to my comment from a month ago about seeing her at Oya, saw her two nights running in Oslo in November and she was indeed incredible yet again. And I got to meet her too! She was utterly lovely. 😊

In the spirit of this singer, who evokes Bjork obviously but also Kate Bush, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on 70s punk icons like Poly Styrene from X-Ray Spex, Ari Up from the Slits, Siouxsie & the Banshees, and so on. Maybe younger audiences haven't encountered the early punks who are still a touchstone for singers like Aurora.

Firstly I horta say I love your video's. I really love the informal music theory you impart. I noticed straight away the bassist was playing a fender 6. I recently bought myself one (whilst I was having treatment at the Christie, but that's another story I won't get into here). Aurora is an amazing vocalist. She's not only singing in English but also in Norwegian!! I'm working my way through all the vids on your channel and it's helping me through the ups and downs of chemo. Thank you for that dude.
