The Real Five Points, The Neighborhood That Inspired ‘Gangs of New York’

Weird History | December 25, 2025

Martin Scorsese’s period epic Gangs of New York took up residence in the chaos-ridden New York City neighborhoods of the mid-1800s, populated by eccentric characters and vicious acts of aggression. Its depiction wasn’t entirely accurate, but it was based on a very real neighborhood and the very real misery it experienced. Five Points, a major intersection in lower Manhattan, was home to a host of impoverished immigrants seeking a better future for their families. That future wasn’t easy to come by; newcomers mostly encountered hostility and distrust, which often boiled over into conflict.

This area is a short walk from the courthouse where a lot of Manhattanites do Jury Duty. I used to get a sandwich into the area, sit in the area and imagine what it was like.

Don't tell black people they used another cultures dance. Otherwise they won't be able to claim EVERYTHING in existence came from them. Also they won't be able to call white people culture vultures.

I remember thinking Gangs of New York was too far fetched to be based on real events and people. Then after studying the Five Ponts history I learned the real events and people were even crazier and worse than depicted😮

One of the greatest movies ever made and the actor who played bill the butcher deserves 10000 awards so so so underrated and one of the best performances as a role I think in movie history
