I loved the end of the video and how you ask about the rules of magic… it's funny because you'll have to wait a loooong time (in books time) to find out wtf with that diary

Please continue to read these books! I am really enjoying your analysis of this book, especially your thoughts about how magic works in this series! I look forward to the next video as well as your videos on social issues! Keep it up! Holla!

While the rules for magic in Harry Potter are better explained in later books, and some things become more clear, the magic system isn't particularly well thought out, and there are some things she says later that don't make too much sense in terms of the earlier books (not to say that they aren't great books, I love them, but worldbuilding and magic isn't really rowlings strong point. It really is mostly like what the1janitor said, things usually just happen because Rowling wants them to. which is ok, they're childrens books

Oh my god, I'm having so much fun vicariously rereading the series through you! I love hearing all your theories and interpretations because I don't even remember reading them for the first time!

You should read the Dresden Files. As much as I love Harry Potter, it's only the second best fantasy series about a wizard named Harry. Dresden Files is way more structured in terms of plot arcs, and the magic is very much based on clearly defined rules and limitations. There's a lot more setup , which means there's a lot more payoff. Personally, I think it's way better. The first book in the series is "Storm Front." But you need to stick with it through at least "Summer Knight."

I'm really excited about this series that you're doing! I loved Harry Potter as a kid, and it's so cool to see an adult read it for the first time and react so well to them. It's crazy how a children's book is able to bridge gaps like that. JK Rowling is a genius, I can't wait to see how you react to some of the upcoming books. And yes, I feel like the books just get better, along with Rowlings writing style, as the series continues, so you have a lot to look forward to!

If you want to be sorted into house, brew potions and duel on Pottermore, there are literally 2 days left before it closes those options forever. After that just bonus stories from JK Rowling will be on it (which is awesome on it's own, but wish they left those other options too)

The Time Turner never really gets explained in too much detail. And then it just gets written out of the plot just as quickly as it was mentioned because Rowling must have realized how stupid time travel in Harry Potter is…

It's the perfect example of something that was utterly DROPPED from the story without explaining anything about it.

I'm enjoying this so much, you have no idea. Your questions are really smart & some of them are gonna be answered in the near future, some may be open til the last books.
There are so many clues and tie ins through the whole series, tha last book came out in 2007 and people are still talking about everything and finding new little (and big) links between stuff. It's amazing.

well… be sure that there are in fact rules for the magic. but don't look it up, NEVER ever because you will get a LOT of spoilers. some points may seem random and solved 5-6 books later. you'll never know, so don't look it up, period! It'll destroy some pretty badass "whoa…" moments

"Enough paragraphs have occurred for the poly juice potion to work." That may be the best thing I've ever heard. Also, yes, this stuff is all significant and it kind of sort of gets explained later on. Once all the things get explained you are left with the impression that yes there are rules to the magic, but the mechanics of it have not been explained completely because we don't need the books to be Les Mis kind of dense.

All magic has rules from what I've seen. For potions, they can only be done by people who have magical abilities. Aside from the fact that the ingredients used to make potions can usually only be found by magical people (because a lot of these ingredients are held by very dangerous creatures), all potions must be finished off by waving the wand over the potion. The wand channels magic into the potion, making everything come together. If a muggle were to try and make a potion they would end up with some weird stew that had no magical properties. OR chemistry happens~ But no magic. Potions aren't permanent. To extend their effects a person has to keep taking it.
