It feels good to be in a creative flow, and because it is creative work it can feel very meaningful and fulfilling, but I also want to make memories and savor time. Flow is too effortless and time goes by too fast. I enjoy the memorableness of surprises and discontinuities. I think engagement and feeling alive but also having more metacognition and being in a more learning and novelty remembering mode is what I prefer to flow.

I have a question if anyone would be kind enough to indulge me. I like the idea of meditation, constantly bringing yourself back to your breath and learning how to notice every passing emotion so you don't carried away in it. But isn't that very thing the opposite of being in a flow state? Sometimes I like being lost in my own world, but meditation seems to seek to bring me out of it so I'm can no longer be in flow. Thoughts?

Weird that you disparage games but good games are literally just trying to get you into a flow state.

the early days of doing a drug can feel like a shortcut to the flow state. but after a certain point, the enjoyment reaches its peak and then everything falls back to the flatline again. its better to find something that continuously tests u but rewards u with the time and effort and heart you put in. im by no means anti-drug entirely but its definitely something to have to be clear=minded about, not to get sucked too far into that mindset of wanting the next high until none of the highs feel that way any more. be kind to yourself and others, and stay safe out there yall <3

(Mind you, this is including the negatives. I'm not advocating for anyone to neglect their responsibilities or, worse, fall to idolatry. 1 John 2: 15-17.)
Sisyphus 55: lumps video games in with other mindless activities
Also Sisyphus 55: "To achieve a flow state and actually be happy, you. . . " proceeds to describe some of the things video games do best

This part about flow, you described racing for me, effortless effort, my mind at 100%, thinking about how to overtake, defend, where to place myself, and how to go faster, at the verge of total control loss, all of that while perfectly calm, and relaxed, experiencing this paradoxical state of mind truly is why I've been born

Free time isnt happiness, its part of happiness. Happiness stems from a balance between honest living, working, and personal enjoyment.

If I fucking want a loving girl to look a certain way and be my wife but can't have her then I'll never be happy. Simple as that.

This is a common pitfall for software developers who love their work. I've fallen victim to the addictive nature of all-night programming binge sessions. 24-hour hackathons are popular because of this rush, and though they border on the promotion of unhealthy habits, at least they have a clearly defined end. I've worked myself to the point of burnout many times, but after a crash and recovery, it's intoxicating to get back into flow state. As I've matured, I've been able to keep myself in check, though admittedly I miss the excitement and fulfilment I once felt when diving into my work.

Aren't (video) games at the core crafted 'flow' experiences? Besides all other enticing and addictive thing put on top of the cake, like stories, skinner's box RNG mechanics…

What if your hobbies are like not games… Like maybe you are interested in philosophy, political science, psychology etc etc. How to turn those things into hobbies or games?

It's very interesting how similar flow psychology is to taoist philosophy. These are ideas that have existed for millennia but now it's backed by science.
