INFO: Styx is an American rock band from Chicago that formed in 1972 and became famous for its albums released in the late 1970s and early 1980s. “The Grand Illusion”. “Pieces of Eight” and “Paradise Theatre” are considered to be some of their best albums. “The Mission” is their sixteenth studio album so far.

This album is a complete A+. It is rare to get that rating. This album deserves it go listen NOW!

Even though Chuck is the only "founding" member, Tommy Shaw and JY really are the ones who still remain in the band who helped solidify the sound that everyone knows Styx for (including the falsetto backing vocals). Dennis of course was perhaps the singular greatest influence but I feel they've carried that sound forward without him pretty well!

Their best album hands down I know because I can't quit playing the songs are good and rememberable production great and if I saw them live I would want to hear at least 4 songs of that album that is how you know a album is great and just because of the name behind

There is always going to be a degree of cheeze with Styx, especially in the lyrics. It just comes with the territory. You get it or you don't. I get it. The Mission is a terrific album.

This album connects them more to Rush. Cygnus versus Khedive. Todd Sucherman fills out the void left from Neil Peart's passing.

"Radio Silence" has strong vibes of "Man In The Wilderness" from The Grand Illsuion

Khedive is the point at which the ship breaks Martin atmosphere and the crew see the wonder of Mars. This album is classic Styx. Hints from every past album. If you like the old band, you will love this album. I just saw The Mission live in Boston and I would see it again in a minute. Keep progressing Styx. Great review.

What a GREAT informative review. This guy really did his homework. I loved the way he presented this entire review.
He really needs to listen to Pieces of Eight and what I consider their best album Equinox. Great review!

It's nice to see the younger generation enjoying Styx's latest material… And yes, you're correct, it was great to hear Styx go back to their prog roots, before a certain member started with the bubblegum pop, and love ballads…

Radio Silence is my favorite track. I can listen to the entire CD from beginning to end over and over.

Dude, loved your effort here. Appreciated your candor and presentation. Happily agreeing to disagree in some areas like your final conclusion. 🙂 Loved much of your review though. Now a new subscriber. This is really a superb full Album Experience, like many of us have been wanting from any band for years. So much fluff and single's efforts out there now. I really felt this was indeed a culminating 70's homage and many times in trip'n to this album I have heard so many of the greats in there. Whilst not high. 🙂 From Floyd to Paul Mccartney to Freddie M, Jon Anderson(YES), Starcastle,Eagles and others, I was frankly amazed at the sensation of that linkage that happened for me…without expectation. With each listen I find there are layers of depth that are revealing and their maturity of musicianship itself is really showing. . Thanks again.

While James Young wasn't there for the formation of Styx, he was there for the recording of the first album.
But JY and Tommy Shaw are the core of this band and they're still here.
It'd be nice if they'd reconcile with Dennis DeYoung, but that's probably not gonna happen.
At any rate, I like the new album, though it took a few listens before it clicked for me.

That's a surprise, a new album from Styx. Good old Rock band, liked them when I was little…. Still have one song on my mp 3, "Sing for the day" from Pieces of eight. (It makes me happy) That album is a feelgood record. How you describe it, the new Styx is a must hear. "Locomotive" had some cool cords. I'll give it a try. Like the artwork . Good review! Think the TR fans will like this too! I'll share. TX C
