Adolescence Is #1 on Netflix—and It’s Got the Manosphere Shook
Just announced more dates on my 2025 tour! Check out https://joshjohnsoncomedy.com/tour for dates and to sign up for the waitlist to be notified when I’m performing in your city.
Hi Friends,
This week I wanted to share my thoughts on the hit Netflix show adolescence. It has been the number one show on Netflix for 4 weeks straight and has amassed somewhere around 100 million views making it Netflix’s most popular English speaking show.
It stars Stephan Graham and Owen Cooper, who made his acting debut in the series.
The show deals with topics like the manosphere, red pill, incels, and the coded language teenagers use to communicate ideas around the topics.
This set reminded me of my own struggles as a young man and how things could have gone very differently for me.
Hit me on them internets:

it's too accurate, bcus when i was in third grade, my on-off 'boyfriend' (named 'devon bizer' lmao) broke up with me. and i was crying my eyes out on the bus ride home, wholeheartedly thinking "it's because i wore uggs with my jean shorts. he thinks i'm ugly. or my feet stink bcus they're sweating so bad right now. i knew i shouldn't have worn boots with my shorts! stupid!" 😭💀

Reminds me of a phrase my therapist uses: Kids are great observers, but poor interpreters.
Not all the time, of course. Sometimes a child's interpretation is spot on. But so many times, the experiences we have as kids — good or bad — can impact how we look at ourselves and our lives in ways that aren't based in reality.

Men used to have deeper loving relationships with their bros. Share far more meaningful conversations with each other, They’d hug too!
And then homophobia came into the mainstream, and men everywhere avoided anything that could possibly be interpreted as gay. Even to the point of avoiding “girly” drinks, as if they don’t taste damn good! That closeness disappeared for a lot of men.
I am seeing this start to change with the next generation, the stigma of being gay isn’t as bad. Gives me a bit of hope.

This is probably one of the best and most needed comics of today. While some keep the same old material for years, he quickly comments on current topics flawlessly. I sometimes learn about current events from his new show on YouTube. Also him giving the flowers to the spectators not the other way around, is the kinda fresh thinking I simply adore. He's a cool role model for men in a time men really need it. There's too many bad apples with pure self interest as intent corroding our interpersonal culture, or too many spoons of pitch in our barrel of honey. This dude is honey for sure. No homo!

I actually got fired recently for trusting a coworker with some heavy and embarassing information about myself that i thought i could trust her with. She deleted her responses in the conversation where she consented to me telling her after giving a warning and her sympathetic & encouraging responses before reporting it to the GM, making it look like i just trauma dumped all that on her against her will. Worst betrayal so far in my life so yeah, definitively understand the backlash from being vulnerable and open with the wrong person.
I agree, if I was Gen Z i almost definitely would have fallen into the manosphere trap. I did have a misogynist phase in my mid-20s due to self-loathing, as you say. Fortunately i wad able to pull myself out of it, not sure i could have if the manosphere was around.

I’ve been following you for quite a while, I’m 49 I can honestly say you’re my favorite comedian ever! I usually watch reels/shorts/clips. I’m rarely watch longer videos on YouTube. I watched 3 over the last few hours and they all have nearly brought me to tears. You are just incredible, so deep. But right before I cried you brought back the humor. I think you are one of a kind. You go deep, you spread knowledge, and spread meaningful messages without emphasis on fear. while still inspiring us to make a difference. Thank you, Josh. I hope to make it to one of your life shows remember that YOU are 27:16 making a huge difference in the world. Thank you

1. "if you're in the world, you're worth the world."
2. If anyone–esp. a man–opens up to you, how you respond is going to make the difference between him being willing to open up again or that wall going right back up, but with another layer of bricks.
3. "Word!"

Ok I am absolutely dying laughing, cuz my Mother was a horrible 'cook' lol and I would get these sores in the corners of my mouth. When she took me to the pediatrician, he was VISIBLY (even too me, as a child – "oooo, Mom's in big trouble now" 😂) in shock, as he informed her I had SCURVY – "What do you FEED this child? I haven't seen SCURVIES since the WAR!" ROTLMFAO!
She could Bake like a Mo'Fo though (I DO NOT like sweets to this day)🤣!

"Who taught you to hate yourself" stopped me in my tracks. I'm fairly happy now, or at least am able to convince myself that I am, but that really hit. I have a lot to unpack there.

Stop calling it the "Manosphere." You're giving them ownership over masculinity and don't have any. They only fake it. They don't represent real men. Real men aren't threatened by LGBTQIA people, feminism, etc. They aren't the manosphere they are the bitter betasphere. Also, just a side note, Janelle Monae is a national treasure…you say her name with RESPECT.
