How Long Famous Landmarks Took to Build

Weird History | September 25, 2025

The Great Pyramid of Giza. The Great Wall of China. The Parthenon. The Eiffel Tower. Stonehenge. Great structures capture our imagination and give us a lasting collective heritage. (They also provide the backdrop to innumerable selfies.)

But while they may last for centuries, these familiar objects have widely divergent building times. Some take decades to erect, others just a few years. Still others have been slowly created over centuries. Here are some of the world’s most famous landmarks, along with the time it took to make them a reality.

Wasn't the Statue of Liberty started as a new colossus of Rhodes but changed once the major canal projects it was going to be the entrance for was cancelled?

If they restored the broken off part of the Coliseum and maybe slapped a fresh coat of paint on it they could use it for soccer games and stuff. They let it get so run down though.

It took so much time, money and labor to finish the Great Wall. Imagine their disappointment when they realized it still didn't keep out their neighbor's dog, who simply dug a hole underneath.

I have been to Rhodes and seen where the Colossus was. But why does this video show it looking so differently (looking to the side holding a torch, looking up holding a cauldron of fire, etc.)? Is there uncertainty as to what it actually looked like?

Sorry not sure if it's been mentioned already, but the portrait shown as that of Maurice de Sully isn't actually his. That portrait is of Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, born in 1560. One can tell it's not the same person because the ruff (that frilly thing around his neck) is an item of the mid-16th to mid-17th centuries clothing.

Really funny mispronunciation of "Yong Le". Really ironic how you try to make educational videos, pumping who knows how many hours into making this and then can't be arsed to even waste the single minute it takes on Google Translate to verify the pronunciation lol

The usage of BCE/CE is so bizarre. I get that its supposed to be less religious than the Christian BC/AD, but you're still keeping track of time based on the reported birth of Jesus Christ.
