Ryan Hamilton | You Better Have Some Jokes | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out

Mike Birbiglia | September 12, 2025

Three years ago, comedian Ryan Hamilton was hit by an airport shuttle bus. Two years ago, Ryan came on Working It Out to talk about the experience. Now, he returns to explain how he learned to talk about the traumatic event on stage and find the humor in the pain, which included buying weed with his mom during his recovery. Ryan also breaks down the daily routine of touring with Jerry Seinfeld, and shares the blunt advice he got from Chris Rock.

See Ryan Hamilton’s special taping at the Neptune Theatre in Seattle on October 4.

I'm so psyched for Ryan's new special!! I've probably watched Happy Face 50 times – top shelf comedy, hands down. I laugh every time I watch it, and I could probably recite them from memory. Always makes my day brighter. Sorry to hear about the bus accident. So glad he got through it stronger.

That was fun! I enjoyed hearing what goes into creating each of your shows/how you.'work it out" by yourselves and together. It's fun for me to hear you exchanging stories & ideas; listening to you finding the gems/what & which parts of your individual 'stories' provoke laughter and serious, valuable connection & reflection. It's kind of like being at the kitchen table with friends while they describe their work, and share their enthusiasm for it, their new realizations & their respect for the profound/silly, sometimes-embarrassingly 'stupid', touching moments they've observed and lived. Thanks very much🥰.

Mr. Hamilton, you are a delight as always! Do take all Mr. Birbiglia's suggestions- they are spot on. Your story, when you tell it, is funny. It is also serious and gripping storytelling that drops off- more details as suggested please! Not to be intimidating but the only story I have read as well told from the POV of victim is Stephen King's in On Writing. Keep going, you can write a book too, I would read it!

You described crowd work as a crutch that is used when things are not working. If you look at some of Jimmy Carr's recent YouTube episodes, you will see that this is not always the case.

I kinda think he could’ve used the whole hit by a bus as a full stand up even when he was still hurt, I kind of feel like most audiences would’ve given him a pass, like if he was in pain for a moment or needed to stop to take a breath, he could have but you just need to find the laugh or joke there which could be very smart, but it would be very hard

I love Ryan Hamilton! Saw him in PA in 2024. Can't wait to see his next big show. Ryan is wonderfully funny and somehow even more handsome after the accident! He is destined to be one of the greats!

Mike, huge fan. Please stop running cover for Seinfeld. Jerry Seinfeld supports (financially and ideologically) the most evil "country" in the world. He supports unaliving of children in Gaza and the West Bank. He supports "settlers" assaulting and stealing land from Palestinians.

Please look at what is going on in the middle east and think about how you would feel if your child was starving and couldn't even get clean water.
