Marion Stokes was an eccentric Philadelphia native who obsessively recorded multiple TV channels on VHS tapes for 35 years. Her archive of over 40,000 tapes have become a priceless document of a pivotal period of American history – and may help us to better understand the world today.

she was crazy and had mental health issues. She was rich because she got lucky married a rich husband and she liked apple stock. She was a hoarder. However though she was crazy she did humanity a service by recording everything on t.v. people always assumed stations kept all the old tapes. They did not. she saved many things from disappearing

VHS cassettes can't be played any more? … Really? … Despite the fact there are probably millions of VCRs all over planet Earth? … You can STILL play video formats considerably older than VHS! For example, SONY CV, EIAJ, U-Matic, and Philips VCR, to name a few!

The Fair Play for Cuba Committee was a communist front organization funded by Fidel Castro. The committee was supported by members of the Socialist Workers Party and the Communist Party USA (the cooperation of these two radical left-wing political parties is remarkable, given their political, ideological, and doctrinal differences). The goal of the committee was to weaken American resistance to communist aggression in Vietnam and to strengthen American popular support for Castro's communist regime in Cuba. The most famous Fair Play for Cuba Committee member was, of course, Lee Harvey Oswald, the communist and rogue CIA asset who assassinated U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Coupled with Marion M. Stokes's participation in "civil rights" issues, which were themselves often incited and organized by the Communist Party USA and numerous other left-wing groups, it can be accurately said that Stokes was at the very least a communist sympathizer. Her enormous collection of videotapes and books is fascinating, that much is true, but any biographical sketch of her should not leave out the unsavory portions of her life.

Had she been poor, she would have been labeled a hoarder, told she needed help for her mental health issue, and everything would have been dumped in the garbage.
Don't get me wrong: I think it's amazing what she captured, just things could have ended up different.

It's not paranoia, if it's true. Activists are often monitored, and history has shown us what happens to many activists. I'm very glad to see that her work is being archived, and that we've been able to recover decades of info that was otherwise lost. I can't imagine it was easy for her family but the world will benefit from her hard work.
