INFO: The Dreaming is the fourth studio album by the English singer Kate Bush, released in 1982 via EMI Records. Recorded over two years, the album was produced entirely by Bush and is often characterized as her most uncommercial and experimental release.

"the second half of the album isn't as intense"
cuts off Houdini right before she starts screaming about how Houdini is jumping into a raging waterfall

What a lovely review. Thank you. Want to add that Bush conceived of these songs as "movies". In There Goes a Tenner, gangster movies are directly referenced, Night of the Swallow is very cinematic. I believe Get Out Of My House is meant to invoke The Shining. Oh, now I hear you saying "movie". Exactly.

Night of The Swallow deserved more attention, I think.

Check the video of Sat In Your Lap. At one point a bamboo stick accidentilly snaps. The sound of it was used on the album. At 2.07 min.

Imagine hearing Sat In Your Lap on your radio? I bought the single when it was first released in the music stores. Funnily enough, Kate Bush appeared on a kiddie TV show here in the UK promoting it, such was her cross-sell appeal. I guess here in England during the 80s, we had a very eclectic mix of great musical talent that we all bought into. You should perhaps also cover Matt Johnson's The The.

I remember that Kurt Loder began his review of this album with the wonderful line "This is what progressive music would sound like had it actually progressed." For fun, listen to Peter Gabriel's third album (the so-called "melting face" album) either before or after this one.

My favourite Kate Bush album. The songs sound weird because they are organically designed in the same way that Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings were organically designed — form follows function.
Peter Gabriel's fourth solo album, also from 1982, also an early use of the Fairlight CMI, is paralleled by Kate's fourth, and same is true of their respective third albums, both from 1980.

This is one of my all time fave albums. I used to mime to Get Out Of My House back in the 80s. I'd viciously throw cushions across the room.😀

Leave it open is a song about tripping. I heard this album on acid and the mastery and musicianship is unprecedented! Beautiful album!

I believe it was her first self-produced album, so her creativity was completely unleashed. I love it! Hard to pick my fave album to listen to, but Aerial is probably top of the list.

This is easily my fave Kate Bush album – she was heavily influenced on this one by peter gabriel who she had worked with on his 3rd album (or "Melt") doing a lot of background screams and "vocalizations" which he processed through the Fairlight (a sampler/synth). Kate is a treasure, a beautiful light that I always return to. Glad that there are so many others who dig this album. Cheers from Ottawa!

The best thing about Bush is that 98% of her songs are actually just complete fiction in the sense that they have no intended reflection of her actual life. She just makes characters and acts.

I just discovered this review. The Dreaming is my favorite album of all time. And you’re right, every time I listen to it, I hear something new and different because of how experimental this record is. Truly a masterpiece. Lyrics open to interpretation and Bush’s vocals (and sounds) on this are iconic to me.

I love how surreal The Dreaming was as a song when I listened to it as a teenager, but I would always remind myself to stop the song just before the last bit of whispering that appears just after the song fade off, its a deep mumbling voice that says some sort of gibberish stuff, that bit really unnerves me as it sounded to me like the voice of the devil in The Exorcist, its the stuff of nightmares … its so funny now that I've grown up, its still a bit disturbing to hear that last bit from that song …
This album would not rank as high as Hounds of Love and Never Forever for me, but there are quite a few gems here to discover….

Let's not forget she bought a Fairlight CMI, the first sampler and was inventing how music is made today.

haha I didn't see that Death Grips comparison coming… you crazy for that one bruh
But speaking of comparisons, it seems like every female musician who makes "weird" and decidedly feminine pop music will be compared to Kate Bush sooner or later. Even when they sound nothing like her, the question "is she the next Kate Bush?" is always raised. Kate became the standard that everyone is compared to, and while that's kind of unfair in a way (e.g. I think Joanna Newsom is just as good in her own way for example) albums like this one make it pretty easy to see why the comparison keeps being made.

never got to watch this review when it first came out – I love this album though! 'Suspended In Gaffa' really stuck out to me but I suppose that's the song that most people latch onto. Bush has always had that eccentric charm to her music but I reckon it comes into full force and full colour on this album. It's awesome.

Hi C, have not played her in a long time. The Kick Inside, I do have on vinyl, a played it till death. The Saxophone song, was my favorite. Have not listened to The Dreaming very much ( I do not have it, that's why) so I'll take you advise (9/10 must be good) and will check it out! Have been busy with that darn VHS of my old band. Al those cables…glad that's not needed any more. it is on my PC now and have to transfer it to You Tube.. Tx for the Kate Bush review. 💃
