The Saudis sold 99.5% of their stake in Tesla in 2019 when the share price was around $420. They invested into Lucid instead. What a great move this turned out to be.

All these new startups go for the cream end of the market cause that is where the profit margins are but then end up overblowing and overpricing and still end up in a lose. They need to serious cost cutting if they want to survive, who cares about 1000hp. Give me an economical shitbox with just enough power so that i won't die trying to merge on to the highway, just the basic electronic to pass the safety standard and a massive range.

Ok this notion that lucid is doomed I have heard for last 3 years , but I think they will survive and will continue to survive.

why sell a car if the cost to build the car is more expensive xdxd
@Ianmundo
August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
New EV companies will try everything except developing a $45000 model 🤦 Lucid seems destined to be bought out by another traditional automaker for their tech, but without the hype premium.

Here after the August 5 earnings report. Took less than three weeks for the euphoria of the Uber partnership to end.

Why don’t these robotaxis use Priuses?
@pacmanwa
August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
EV’s are great if you can charge at home, live in a year round warm climate and daily commute is well within range of 50% of rated performance. But longer trips are a nonstarter. And to this the risk of a Fiskar style out of business and parts non-existent. Who wants an unrepairable 100K car.
@vakama94
August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
So maybe a naive a question but why hasn't Lucid expanded to other countries like Mexico, the UK or more countries from the EU?
@MiguelRPD
August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
True but their tech and range are the only top contenders in the EV world. They at least have that going for them.

These cars are waayyyyy too expensive while simultaneously not having enough of a name brand/precense to demand their prices.
Not very many people even know about lucid so if you're rich enough to afford their cars you might as well go for a more expensive Tesla model because I dont think many people are going to be like "wow that guy owns a lucid, the expensive EV, that's soo cool!" But that does happen for things such as the model y and for worse, the cybertruck.
If you're simply looking to flex your cash their most expensive models are creeping a little too close into the category of super luxury vehicles such as Ferrari and Lamborghini and are well in their way of traditional luxury vehicles such as Mercedes and jaguar.
Not much market share it seems like, the only way to get more isnt by launching something at $50k but more so something at $30k which middle class people may be able to afford and justify buying, especially since theyve shown themselves to be better than teslas.
If you have enough to afford a $50k car, I dont think you're in the market to save gas by that point, so why not simply get a Mercedes, Audi, or BMW instead of this brand barely anyone knows about?
Not much marketshare to grab in this sector, best bet is to compete directly with Tesla on prices but having the clearly better cars without the Musk stain on them

August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
I mean the car is cool but even the worst model is like 100K. That is never going to sell, they need cheaper cars and Tesla has that market cornered. Other EVs can’t compete in that regard. The idiotic VW buzz is like 90 grand
@shush2000
August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
It's such a shame because unlike a lot of the other tick companies you analyze and discuss, Lucid actually makes incredible and award-winning products!

The problem with Lucid is the pitfall of trying to be good at everything resulting in being good at nothing. Tesla is good at one thing, and it doesn’t expand until that one thing is perfected…..they didn’t come out with a 2 second car, it was an incremental process that kept product costs reasonable. Lucid took a development hit by chasing Teslas benchmarks on day one, benchmarks that took years to perfect…..speed, battery capacity….and now it seems they want the robotaxi market as well? All of this and they sell nothing

Cars that weight 6,000lbs+ and cost $80K+ are unacceptable. If we had proper regulators, none of these hazardous machines would be allowed on our roads.

WSM, this is disappointing (and the first time!!). You never crunched Waymo's self-produced numbers!! Waymo's numbers are fictitious. This is from their own website: "2024 has been a year of incredible growth, connection, and learning for Waymo. We couldn't be more grateful for our riders and the trust they’ve placed in us to serve over 150,000 trips every week." So, this cuts their crazy claim of 250K/week trips by 40% (a rounding error in tech company-speak).
And this data from their website (dated December 2024): We served over 4 million fully autonomous rides this year alone, bringing us to over 5 million rides total. With the Waymo Driver at the wheel, riders enjoyed over 1 million hours in their own trusted space to make the most of their time – working on the go, belting karaoke, or just sitting back to unwind. And with our all-electric fleet powered by renewable energy, Waymo riders helped avoid over 6 million kilograms of CO2 emissions*.
So, of the 5M rides total, only 4M were 'fully autonomous'. Also, 150,000 trips every week equals 7.8M/year, not the 4 or 5 million claimed.
Take a look at this stat: 'Waymo has also reached 100 million fully autonomous miles overall, with 50 million of those miles occurring in the last six months of 2024.
Also, the 'miles (km) per ride' are skewed by dividing the number of passengers in vehicle into the trip distance. So, a two-mile ride with four passengers becomes only a half-mile driven – making the dollars per mile artificially inflated. Think about it – the 'average' distance driven per fare is less than a mile (as shown).
The only reason Uber jumped into this losing proposition is that they have lost $50B since 2014. Showing a miniscule profit now is embarrassing and they know this. So, they are going back to the big-red numbers in order to lead the fanboys on to the next big trillion-dollar gainer – and its name is Lucid – which has lost only measly $14B since 2019.
Let me ask this: How many cab drivers, in $2500, bullet-proof Crown Victorias made huge money? Now, how many would make money in $300K vehicles? Such scams and no one can see reality anymore.
This whole industry is a scam, and I request a WSM Part-Two!!!

The problem is that they want to be a luxury brand in a segment that has very few established non luxury brands let alone luxury. Many people still prefer fully gas or hybrid cars over EVs. The demand has shrunken greatly and those who are buying are going to Tesla, Rivian, Kia/Hyundai, GM, and Honda. And of course in China there are the very successful Chinese brands like BYD. Lucid is going to have to launch affordable non luxury models if they are going to survive imo. EVs and EV technology has not yet matured, it hasn’t even hit its peak yet. We still have a ways to go in terms of battery technology and charging infrastructure(particularly in the US)

I don't know why they painting Starlink as a big success!Elon told us Starlink would have 30 million customers in 2025 but in reality they only have around 6 million!
@kaijen2688
August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
How about making an affordable car? Electronics are cheap, maybe their battery is expensive, but the electronics are dirt cheap. And they have developed motors for cars that are only a few hundred dollars. So make a 20k dollar car, with 300 miles of range and 500hp. Use a 300 dollar computer for screen and controls, this is totally doable.
@HonuFlight
August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
8:23 I doubt the Uber and Lyft prices include a tip, which is an expectation. Once that's factored in Waymo is the same price, plus you don't have to deal with a person, which is a plus in my book.

I really want Lucid to succeed. They have done some really great innovation in the development of their motor, controller, and battery integration. Unlike Tesla, their cars reportedly handle and ride very well. But Lucid’s build quality and reliability are terrible and, like Tesla, they make stupid design decisions. For example, motorized door handles that don’t work well, HVAC controls on the screen, etc. More importantly, their business won’t be sustainable until they have a competitor to the Model Y, with a base price of around $45k. The Gravity isn’t simply too expensive to be anything more than a niche model.
The largest concern is that they are entirely dependent upon the largess of MBS. If he wakes and realizes that he has been spending good money after bad, then Lucid is done tomorrow.

the thing is, and cannot be understated, the Gravity looks REALLY bad. It reminds me of a Renault Espace in europe, more like an mpv than suv

August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
9:00 Important to mention that waymo has 100k worth of sensors on each car. The purchase price doesn't matter as much then. Also, the manufacturer needs to support the integration of the sensors and self driving software.
Why do you think waymo uses Jaguars? It probably was the only manufacturer willing to help with integration at the time. Programming the system for a different car is very very hard, so that's why they've probably not done it yet.
@maemorri
August 14, 2025 at 9:25 am
Robotaxis could be a god business, but ultimately they will just wind up pushing Uber drivers off the road, and then driving down prices. Big profits won't last long. May not be as useful in rural areas.
@gw7514

No it won't save lucid, it's just another way to squeeze more money from investors before it fails!
First make good cars, then branch out to other synergizing ventures.
