Chelsea Handler | Why She Must Say It | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out

Mike Birbiglia | August 13, 2025

Chelsea Handler has achieved massive success, from her latest Netflix special The Feeling to her worldwide tours to her Las Vegas residency. But as she discusses with Mike, and details in her new book I’ll Have What She’s Having, she wasn’t always on top of the world. Chelsea tells Mike about bombing badly at Just For Laughs, and how some advice from Jane Fonda helped her during a difficult time. Plus, the story of when Chelsea unintentionally drove a giant bag of cocaine across the country, and why she felt compelled to confront Woody Allen with a very dark joke.

Birb – you should have told the blonde sleaze to apologize to Andy Richter for being so hugely rude to him on Conan's show, while you had here there.
Richter has more comedy in his lil piggie toe than she has in her entire entitled body.

Flight attendants are NOT hero’s. My foot swelled up and I asked for ibuprofen or an ice pack. They gave me a leaky bag of ice. I also expected they have a medical chair to put my leg up. Nope. I had to put it on the tray in my cramped seat and risk further injury. I agree they shouldn’t have to deal with shittyviolent people, but provide some basic humanity to people would be nice. We aren’t all in first class. So YOU guys get treated well. Many of us don’t. There’s a lot of ableism

Same with nurses and teachers. Not heroes. Many are bullies and I’ve dealt with these bullies as an autistic woman. Let’s not idolize anyone.

At first, she seemed like a rude, aggressive person but the more I see her talk I found that she is such a good and strong person. Fights for good causes, protects the weak, and stands up against things that are wrong instead of looking away to save one's ass.. That's a real courage.
She is my role model. We should have more people like her❤ I bought her books too and they are all very great! I recommend audiobooks of her. (Her real voice!)

THANK YOU PINK FLOYD. YOU HAVE BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE BAND SINCE I WAS A CHILD! I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE YOU PERFORM ON THE DIVISION BELL TOUR IN ‘94! MESSAGE RECEIVED! I THINK OF YOU AS I MOVE THROUGH LIFE! GRATITUDE!

I've always loved Chelsea, and watching this I am starting to see how much she has always been the type of person I wanted to be, and the type of person I am, and the type of person I have become. I'm in my 40s now, I also have more stories than you can shake a stick at. I built a career without kissing ass, or letting my ass get kissed, which did come with a lot of failures. But being genuine, confident, independent, especially as a woman, is a powerful thing. It's also seen as a threat, as Chelsea said, even to other women.
Thank you Mike for having her on, and for giving her space to tell her stories. And thank you for your stories as well, just remembering listening to on Bob & Tom while I went out to do morning chores. You both are gifts.

The “misfit” description of ‘The Roundtable’ resonates—watching CL late-night, almost two-decades ago, stirred-up lost-love feelings as a fan of comedy.
