Tragedy, Togetherness & Rock Lobster: The B-52’s Story
If you know the B-52s you probably know them from one of two songs. The surreal sea life-themed post-punk of “Rock Lobster” from 1978 or the raucous permanent karaoke-staple “Love Shack” a decade later. Emerging during the apex of New York Punk, The B-52s had the look of a retro-future that never came, skyhigh beehive wigs and primary colour polyester. And they sounded as if Dick Dale, The Shangri-Las and Edward Lear formed a band after getting really into Yoko Ono. They gave off an air of novelty, billed themselves as the ultimate party band and yet their influence on the realm of alternative rock is staggering. Kitsch and queer-icons in equal measure, this is why The B-52s Are More Important Than You Think.

You didn’t mention it, but I think the B-52s inspired the guitar sound of the Pixies.

The strangest thing of all- is it is impossible to find one video on YouTube or the Internet with guitarist Riky Wilson talking. Not one. You would think the person who came up with riff for Rock Lobster would be invited to numerous talk shows to discuss his incredible talent. Nope. Not one. Even the surviving band members barely talk about him. Yes, one sweet song from his sister, but in all the videos I have seen, there is NOT ONE with Riky talking. Incredible. He was so introverted and meek it prevented him from being social. There is one video of their entire concert at the Capital theatre, 1980- which is I think is their zenith concert, but if you watch it closely, you can see Riky playing like a champion, but he never smiles, never looks at the audience, not once.
It would have been nice to hear in his words how he felt about being the lead guitarist in the B-52's.

Back in the early 80's, maybe 1980, the first time I heard "planet Claire" , it mesmerized me instantly. I've never heard a sound like that before. It's so otherworldly, so cool,so me! Up until now it's still one of my favorite songs in the entire universe.
I remembered when I was an architecture student in the university in Bangkok, Thailand, I played the songs from their first album. My friends shouted at me and said "what is the f..king songs you playing?" ,and maybe they thought that I was losing my mind. It was 1980 that only a few people in my country listen to punk or new wave. They've definitely never heard of the B-52's before. I'm an 64 year old man now and the B is still my no.1 band. Love you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

For the most part, I'd rather not know about the members of the bands whose music I enjoy. I also think music videos push an interpretation of a song instead of the listener creating their own interpretation based on their own experiences.
I pedaled my single speed beach cruiser to the B-52s on my Sony Walkman because their music kept my legs pumping when I would have otherwise slowed down against the headwinds.
