Abigail Devoe | August 1, 2025

He came from the old religion, but possessed no magic skill.

For UK, or more specifically, London and SE England, A show Of Bob Dylan's artworks go on display at the Halcyon, London on May 9th.

edit] Hint for next review. "breathe deep the gathering gloom…"

I hope you cover "I'm not there" – this is somehow one of the mast oddly amazing songs ever. It latched RIGHT on to some "post woman grief" of mine back years ago in a way nothing else ever has.

Abby, I love your content, and I would’ve given you a thumbs up – but it’s really frustrating getting interrupted every couple of minutes with the lengthy ads! Is this so you can rake in more revenue – or is YouTube ripping you off somehow?đŸ€” ADDENDUM: I only made about eight minutes in, got slammed again with commercials, finally gave up-too bad, I would’ve liked to seen the whole thing – but my love for this album can’t withstand the repeated onslaught of commercialism. I’m out – and I’m unsubscribing, too🙁

My only aspiration in life is to make this world worthy enough for Rhiannon Giddens's presence upon it. She has a voice that could drive the fog from the valleys, and then call it back again.

Abby, you are the true definition of an influencer. I bought The Sonics album after you reviewed it. I pulled Smile out of the back of my bookcase after your interview. And now, this great album that I hadn’t listened to in a few years. Thank you for that. I am a huge Rhiannon Giddens fan (have seen her live three times) and you are right that she is a special talent.

Thanks so much for this video, I never knew about this album. 2014 was a rough year for me. Only Dylan could lose 50 lyrics and still generate albums for as many years.

I wouldnt say I'm a hard core Dylan fan, I reserve that title to Melanie and The Beatles. I do enjoy much of Bob's work and so, thank you for this great video. I lived through the music of the 60s and 70s as a teen and I think it's so cool that the music is being kept alive by beautiful people ❀ like you. I'd like to send you some Melanie albums if you are interested. Are you? 😊

I was on the "New Basement Tapes" train when it was released over 10 years ago. I loved the documentary, and gained real respect for Rhiannon Giddens. I admit, I haven't listened to the songs much since then. But it's a delight to see you cover it on your channel. I could have done without the "Bohemian Rhapsody" clip with your overdubbed "waltz", though. And I was surprised to hear your definitions of "hack" (re: "Married To My Hack"). To me, "hack" either meant (1) a writer without a lot of talent (the journalism tie-in, but not confined to journalism; fiction writers have been called that as well); (2) a computer term originally meant as a compliment but became tainted by the use of "hacker" for nefarious purposes; or (3) a taxicab. Looking at the lyric, I wonder if Dylan meant it as a synonym for "truck", as I haven't heard of too many cabs with "12-wheel drive"; it seems that he's comparing women to his job of driving either a truck or a cab. Who knows? Ask Dylan, but he won't answer. As for the "sex worker" thing, that was new to me.

A suggestion for NEXT year's Modern Classics Month: If you can extend your time frame to 30 years instead of 25, it will be the 30th anniversary of Kula Shaker's debut album, "K". Given how much you and I both love The Beatles, and particularly George Harrison, I've wanted to hear your thoughts on "K" for some time. And though the album was released in September 1996, it will still be the anniversary year. Since you make the rules, you can bend or modify them without a vote! So please consider it. Thanks in advance!
