“Deserter’s Songs” by Mercury Rev Almost Wasn’t Made! | Poetic Wax

Poetic Wax | April 13, 2025

In Part 3 of my coverage of the 1998 LP “Deserter’s Songs” by Mercury Rev, I walk through how the album almost didn’t happen, and how events that led up to recording the LP led to it being Mercury Rev’s most hailed album. I talk about the perfect creative storm that brewed at Tarbox Road studio between Mercury Rev, producer David Fridmann, and the other band he was working with at the time — The Flaming Lips — and how they all sort of influenced each other.
