Red Hoop Talk EP 29: LEAH LEWIS & VOTAN IK
On our next #REDHOOPTALK, live Sunday November 1st: VOTAK IK and LEAH LEWIS are an Indigenous couple and the creative force behind the NSRGNTS Brand/Collective. Leah is Pueblo, Diné and Hopi; Votan is Maya and Nahua. Votan has been a muralist and street artist for 20 years, and Leah has painted traditional mimbres style art since a teen. Both artists use traditions, politics, and pop culture to educate, and push the narrative of Indigenous peoples onto larger platforms. Although they both come from artistic backgrounds, together they have developed some of the most iconic images addressing an array of topics across Indian country. Some of their most popular images are the repurposing of iconic logos to reflect our current conditions as Native peoples. Their collaborations on “Native Kawaii” lend a voice to Native youth and children who often have very little or no representation in popular culture.
