Jimmie Rodgers: The Railroad Worker who started Country Music

Tome | March 27, 2025

Note: It’s BRAKEman, not Breakman (as it was mistakenly subtitled).

Long before the honky-tonks of Nashville, before country music had a place to call home, there was Jimmie Rodgers (September 8, 1897 – May 26, 1933). To many, he’s known as the Father of Country Music and responsible for the train sounding music. But to the men on the rails, he was simply ‘The Singing Brakeman.’” Legends like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson cite him as a guiding influence, while his yodeling style found its way from the hollows of Appalachia to the honky-tonks of Texas.
