RIP Neal Langford of The Shins Oh, Inverted World | Poetic Wax
We lost Neal Langford in late July 2023. He passed away at the age of 50. Langford was the original bassist of The Shins, but the story of his impact on the band and indie music extends far beyond their early recordings.
Fronted by James Mercer, The Shins formed in around 1996 as a side project to Mercer and Langford’s other band, Flake Music. But even before that, it was Langford who helped give Mercer the confidence to create music and step in front of the microphone. We owe thanks to Neal Langford for inspiring what would become The Shins and even for Mercer’s other project Broken Bells, a collaboration with producer Danger Mouse.
In this video, I dig into the story and share my copies of Oh Inverted World (The Shins’ debut LP on Sub Pop) as well as the Sub Pop Singles Club 7-inch featuring “New Slang” in this video.
