12:10 A lot of US elections are decided by voter mobilization and voter turnout. It's less important to convert people from party A to B than to simply energize the existing sympathizers to turn up.

Voters do not necessarily flip, individually. They slide into a vague non-voting mass. They may remain sympayhizers with their ideas unchanged, but just apathetic.

Really enjoyable. I really like her take that human rights are non-negotiable. Simply by having the debate, you are legitimizing the question.
I will say though I felt a little attacked by the video essay thing. I love looking back at old media and seeing how ideas have changed or not, I think they are valuable. I do take your point though, that its kind of a lot. But I am a white cis/het male millennial with a philosophy degree.

I thought you were going to tie the first part and second part together by talking about how pregnancy is a common trope of removing women from the action of a movie. And that it works because once pregnant, the options are considered limited in Hollywood both because of the fall of Roe v Wade and because abortion cannot be portrayed on screen as a net positive for a woman in a feature film. To truly eliminate a man from the plot or franchise you have to kill him off but a woman disappears via pregnancy.

2:57 — "Furious 7's audience was 49% female, which is actually a more equitable gender breakdown than this show has!" — In fairness though, some of us thought that we were a different gender until fairly recently 😅🤭
