The “Fake” Bowie Who Conned The 90s

Guitar Meets Science | October 24, 2026

The Spacehog story is a fascinating look at the rise and fall of the 90s glam rock expats who briefly conquered America. From their early days as Leeds transplants in the East Village to the massive success of “In the Meantime,” we explore the brotherly tensions between Royston and Antony Langdon that fueled their ascent. We’ll uncover how a high-profile marriage to Liv Tyler and a disastrously expensive concept album led to their commercial downfall and eventual collapse. This video breaks down the specific production of Resident Alien, the failure of The Chinese Album, and the band’s strange journey from MTV royalty to industry outsiders. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

This VST plugin, The Stereo Sound Extractor, is BADASS -I coded it up from over 10 year’s hard research. It won awards. Now you can own it for the paltry sum of $29. Yup, I’m basically giving it away: https://burninguitfiddle.gumroad.com/l/rbiuu

Spacehog had two excellent singles and a few good B-Sides, but their albums were disappointing overall.

"Mungo City" was an underrated glam-pop gem, and the B-Side, "Adam & Steve" could have been a single by itself. Of course, everyone knows them best for "In The Meantime" with it's hooky bassline and uplifting middle-eight, but, like many songs of the time, it was overplayed and became background music.

Sometimes I wonder whether Royston Langdon ever looked down, mid-coitus, at the contorted yet beautiful face of Liv Tyler and saw Steven Tyler looking back at him. I'd like to think that this vision of horror was what led to their eventual separation.

"Resident Alien" was the album that taught me that a band with one phenomenal song can make a terrible album. Other than the okay "Space is the Place," the rest of the songs were completely forgettable.
