Space Lasers? Anti-Satellite Missiles? The Future is Now | NOVA | PBS

NOVA PBS Official | October 12, 2026

Explore the state-of-the-art tools of modern space warfare.

Space warfare is no longer science fiction. Explore the tech behind it allโ€” from laser “dazzling” systems that can blind enemy satellites, to missile systems that can obliterate them. As the latest space race continues to escalate, will the next battlefield be an orbital zone?

When flat earth is reintroduced for safety reasons in schools (itโ€™s like a hand rail) no one will still care about space itโ€™s not safe to. The earth is flat.

Laser dazzling is easy enough to defeat with wave length filters. Also it seems like America, China and Russia owe the world free cleaning services for earth orbit.

Everybody knows that if ANYBODY starts blowing up satellites in orbit it's going to take out way more than just the enemies' satellites so they don't. Too big a risk to our own satellites. And didn't the United States sign a treaty saying they wouldn't orbit those types of satellites?

As the accumulation of space debris can cause a problem in utilizing space for satellites and other orbiting space technology, the question comes into mind, how could we effectively capture space debris and remove it from orbit as opposed to simply waiting for it to leave orbit??? Well, say the space debris is travelling at 17 000 km/hr, to intercept it is one thing, but to capture it and clean it up is a matter of introspection… As travelling at a high speed, the best way to capture it would be to have something like a blanket of silk, but a very concentrated blanket of silk, as silk is a very strong impenetrable object. But how do you make the capturing of space debris possible as even silk would be penetrated at 17 000 km/hr when it is relatively stationary? If you had a blanket of heavily layered silk that travelled in the same path as the space debris, but travelled slightly slower than the space debris, say at 16 999 km/hr, then the space debris travelling at 17 000 km/hr would only be making impact with the silk blanket at 1 km/hr, as there is only 1 km/hr difference in speed between the space debris and the silk blanket. Tests could be done on earth prematurely to understand if space debris would penetrate a silk blanket at 1km/hr, so that the silk blanket could be layered enough to allow the debris to be captured. The silk blanket could be shaped like an umbrella cone and then have the space debris collect towards the interior of the silk umbrella cone, where it would then be transferred into something like a garbage container where it could be stored. By measuring the space debris in terms of mass and surface area, the calculations could be done to have the space debris collected in orbit and removed by having the silk blanket be strong enough to resist the impact of space debris by travelling at a speed very close to the space debris effectively reducing the impact being made by the space debris and not puncturing the silk space blanket, then stored into a garbage like container within the interior of the space blanket and then have the means of rocket propulsion to descend safely back to earth and then effectively remove space debris from orbiting the earth making space safer again. Obviously the space silk blanket would have to be deployed into orbit first, and then have a speed close to the space debris within the same line of orbit but slightly slower travelling in the same direction and the space debris could then be collected, stored and removed from orbit and then descend back to earth. This is only a hypothesis of how to remove space debris, but it can be done, as space debris travelling at 17 000 km/hr does not make impact at 17 000 km/hr when the capturing of the space debris device is travelling at say 16 999 km/hr, making it only 1 km/hr of an impact speed onto the capturing device mechanism. Think about it, as eventually cleaning up the orbital space debris will be a matter of importance when it makes the orbiting space around earth relatively more dangerous when it is not addressed…

world militaries are going to kill us all. reckless destruction of objects in orbit only happens when you have idiots in charge. which is, unfortunately, what most of the world has. certainly the united states in 2026. and yes, even highly educated people can be idiots.

Hydrazine be very dangerous โ˜ ๏ธ
No, guys. Sorry, it will be AI in space next. Satellites that operate autonomously when they lose the signal from their controllers. Then you've got those little agents that love to invade other little systems.

Its no big secret, do a Google search, that's what SpaceX is for. Defense and sending new equipment and technology that's not linked to anything in existence. Whole new type of war games. There's so much that they don't tell us.
