How One Man and a Happy Accident Created the Iconic Arcade Game | SPACE INVADERS

GenXGrownUp | October 8, 2026

In this video, we go back to 1978 and the story behind Space Invaders: how one Japanese designer, Tomohiro Nishikado, built the game (and even the hardware to run it), why those aliens speed up as you shoot them, and how a simple shooter turned arcades into a global obsession.

Where the idea came from
The happy accident that created the game’s famous tension
How it took over arcades, pizza parlors, and bowling alleys everywhere
Why it still matters to anyone who ever begged for one more quarter

If you spent your childhood hunched over a cabinet with a pocket full of change, this one’s for you.

When I was in junior high, I belonged to a bowling league. At the bowling alley is where I first saw and played Space Invaders. I was immediately hooked. At that same alley, Galaxian soon followed. That became my new favorite.

The first time I played space invaders i was too short to even see my missile base at the bottom of the screen, and played by basing my movements watching my shots going up and dodged enemy shots coming down by pure guesswork. You can imagine my first few quarters didn't last long. 😉 Thanks for the memory unlocks!

I did the same kinda sketch on the 80s ! Worked very well !!!
Paper and pen was real devs tools at that time … (they still are but don't say that, it's a secret !)
I discovered pong in 1977, learned to code with a TI-57 few months later, and thus decided I won't be an electronic engineer, but a software developper !
    I was 10.

Space Invaders is one of the key games that shaped video games as we know them.
Like Pong and Pac Man, it is a keystone of the video games industry. Without Space Invaders, video gaming may never have existed.

Space Invaders and Asteroids were the first arcade games I got hooked on…and then one day when I was 11 or 12, I went to the arcade and saw a crowd gathered around this game. It had a catchy theme song and a little yellow dot muncher cruising around a maze. I was absolutely blown away

I think Space Invaders may have been my first arcade game experience. But it was Asteroids that ate my allowance and paper route money. Was so happy when the 2600 version came out!

Thank you, Mo! This video is going into my favorites.

I'm just barely old enough to have played both Pong and Gun Fighter when they were new, but it was Space Invaders that ignited my lifelong love of videogames. It was also my first Atari 2600 cartridge. I never pass up a chance to play on an original machine, most recently just a couple months ago at DragonCon.

I have several tattoos, representing people, ideas, and moments that are important to me and make me who I am. My love of videogames and their impact throughout my life is represented by a Space Invader on my forearm. It's the only tattoo that's visible when wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

    Honor your roots, yo.

I still remember it like it was yesterday—back in '78, us kids lining up with our coins to play Space Invaders*. Sure, it wasn't the first video game we’d ever seen, but *Space Invaders had something special; it drew you into the race for a high score, and the sounds were fantastic. It was a real game-changer.

I always had a hard time believing the Space Invaders claim when I first saw it. IT it was truly a limitation that made things go slower with more things on screen, then when don't he enemies slow down with shots on screen, or the UFO? I also have a hard time believing that they were going to make the game run at the same speed because it would be painfully easy. People would play for hours on one quarter. Even average players would have no problem. Dealing with the last few enemies was really the only difficulty. So even if ht WAS due to the limitations of hte processor, I think it was always going to be programmed for it to run faster.

Great video Mo! I think perhaps one of the first video games I came across was Space War at a Roller Skating rink back in grade school. Our grade school would take kids in the spring towards the end of the school. I couldn't skate for my life but I loved hanging out around the games just amazed by that new fangled technology. I definitely enjoyed Space Invaders and had a T-shirt back in grade school as well.

That's also a really great emulation of the Arcade cabinet at 6:01 . I've been trying to replicate that one myself. Yeah they're moving faster at the end is iconic, but it was a complete accident. 😉

Afternoon, Mo.👋 Oh wow, a new series, GenX Origin Stories?! Nice! I loved, and still live Space Invaders to this day.
I remember that scrolling car racing game too.
Oh yes, breakout. Was never good at it, although very addictive.
I used to play Space Invaders on my cousin’s Atari 2600 back in the day. After my father gave me an Intellivision, I got uswd to it’s Alternative, Space Armada.
See you again in your next video. PLP PLP 💜💜

    This was Great MO!
I was there when they rolled these out back in the day but so much of this even I didn’t know.
Thanks and keep these coming as they are very interesting, informative and entertaining for this O.G. Casual GenX Grownup Gamer

Niice, .. : ], Yeahh, I already knew a little bit of his story. Great memories playing two-player games with my dad on the Atari. ❣
Hey, later, when If .. you're in the mood again, let's do more Invaders X. …*only if it's good also for you.
We've already added a lot more stuff… and your gameplay and points of view, just like you helped a lot in the first live stream,
can help us even more with balancing the new worlds : ]

    Big hug!
    All the best, man.

    See ya

Without that 'bug', the game would be pedestrian and probably a two minute distraction. The speed-up is what makes it iconic. 💯

I'm always fascinated by the inspiration behind this one. You can kind of see how Nishikado started out with Breakout in mind.
