Why Did Schrödinger Believe He Was God? (Schrödinger Explains)

This video is compiled entirely from Erwin Schrödinger’s own writings, arguments, and philosophical reflections on consciousness, identity, and the nature of the self.

And some of what he wrote sounds almost impossible to believe came from one of the founders of quantum mechanics.

At one point, Schrödinger wrote:

Hence I am God Almighty.

Not as a joke. Not as a metaphor about feeling powerful.

He was trying to make a much stranger argument about what the word “I” actually refers to.

Across his writings, Schrödinger repeatedly returned to the possibility that consciousness is not divided into billions of fundamentally separate minds. The individual self you experience every day might be only one perspective through which a deeper, universal consciousness experiences reality.

That immediately raises some uncomfortable questions.

Where exactly is the “I” inside your brain?

Are you still the same person if your memories disappear?

Does free will exist in a universe governed by cause and effect?

Why does consciousness appear divided if, at some deeper level, it is one?

And if the boundary between you and everything else is not as fundamental as it feels… what exactly happens when you die?

This video brings together Schrödinger’s own ideas on consciousness, personal identity, the illusion of the self, free will, the one-mind hypothesis, Atman and Brahman, death, suffering, morality, and the philosophical problem of the observer.

The goal is not to claim that quantum mechanics proves God exists.

It is to follow Schrödinger’s own line of thought and understand why one of the most important physicists of the twentieth century seriously entertained the idea that the deepest version of “you” may not be an individual at all.

Maybe Schrödinger saw something profound about consciousness.

Maybe he pushed a philosophical idea far beyond what it could actually prove.

Or maybe the strangest part is that, once you follow his argument carefully enough, it stops sounding quite as absurd as it did at the beginning.
