Thank you for these series. I loved the "I love the decade" shows from VH1 back in the early 00s, and with everyone atomized by streaming services over communal cable or network TV and distracted by AI and smartphones and general ignorance and apathy towards the real world seemingly running rampant through society, I was frightened no one would care to keep catalogues of our history anymore. Your channel is even more in-depth than VH1 ever was. 👍🤲

Marilyn feels like a slightly odd choice to use for 1960 in the thumbnail because even though she was indeed huge that year, she’s much more associated with the 50s (though to be fair the early 60s were, from a cultural standpoint, basically just a continuation of the 50s, the cultural shifts unique to the 60s didn’t become as prominent until the mid-60s, and even then that was a transitional period in many ways).

You should really do a dedicated 50s timeline! I recall you saying that footage would be hard to find for it, but I really don’t think it would be much harder to find than footage for the 60s, as very little changed in recording technology between the 50s and 60s. Also, unlike previous decades like the 40s, 30s, etc., television was preeminent throughout the 50s, which much like for the 60s, is a GREAT source of footage.

The 50s defined what our modern version of America would be like in the aftermath of WWII, and more traits of that era became “definitive” elements of America from a cultural perspective than those from perhaps any other decade. That’s not even mentioning the obvious social and political movements/events of the time, many of which would provide the full story of events that continued into the 60s, such as the Civil Rights Movement and Cold War.

The people yearn for a Timeline: 1950s!
