In regards to the transgender segment, I think that while Zizek makes a lot of good points, it’s clear to me that (much like the Barbie movie) he hasn’t actually engaged much with trans people or their theory. He positions trans ideology as being wholly subjective with no room for psychoanalysis, when that simply isn’t the case. The things Zizek proposed are all widely discussed in trans spaces, which he would know if he bothered to check. To specifically talk about determinism, while social pressure is acknowledged, trans people often encourage each other to engage in critique of their newfound identities. If we acknowledge that we were wrong about our subconscious selves before, we have to hold that we are just as liable to be wrong now. Unfortunately these conversations are impossible to have in an environment where any acknowledgement of fallibility will be used a as evidence in favor of our social persecution and removal from society by the government.

From a legal and political standpoint, this is a provocative stance that finds its primary opposition in the work of Isaiah Berlin. Berlin, a towering figure in liberal theory, famously distinguished between negative and positive liberty, warning that when we define freedom as something granted through state-imposed discipline, we open the door to the very paternalistic authoritarianism that characterized the tragedies of the twentieth century. Furthermore, the Nobel laureate Friedrich Hayek argued in The Road to Serfdom that sacrificing individual agency for collective security inevitably leads to the erosion of both.
​In the realm of sociology and cultural critique, Žižek suggests that contemporary movements like cancel culture often replicate the very exclusion they claim to combat. He uses colorful metaphors to describe how these systems can become self-devouring. While his observation captures a certain cultural tension, sociologists such as Pierre Bourdieu would offer a different perspective. Bourdieu might argue that what Žižek dismisses as mere exclusion is actually a complex shift in symbolic capital and a necessary challenge to established power structures. Additionally, political scientists like Francis Fukuyama have noted that while identity politics can indeed become fractious, they often emerge from a legitimate need for recognition that traditional liberal institutions have historically ignored.
​When the discussion turns toward science and psychoanalysis, particularly concerning gender identity, Žižek remains tethered to a Lacanian framework. He argues that identity is not a matter of subjective feeling or biological essence but is instead a traumatic symbolic process. This creates a significant friction with modern neuroscience. For instance, Robert Sapolsky, a prominent neurobiologist, points to evidence suggesting that gender identity has measurable biological underpinnings in brain structure, which contradicts the idea that it is purely a symbolic or psychological construct. From a literary and theoretical perspective, Judith Butler would contest Žižek by arguing that invoking the subconscious as a final authority can be a way of delegitimizing the lived experience and agency of individuals.
​Finally, in terms of logic and the sociology of institutions, Žižek discusses the existence of unwritten rules and the way systems often rely on their own hidden transgressions to function. While this is logically consistent with something like Gödel’s incompleteness theorems—where a system cannot be fully explained by its own internal logic—it can lead to a certain political paralysis. Hannah Arendt provides a vital counterpoint here; she emphasized that true politics occurs in the transparent, public sphere through shared action and speech, rather than in the dark corners of obscene or hidden supplements to power.

People in general don't like freedom. Freedom -> choices -> anxiety, due to multiple complex reasons. Go to the grocery store and see. People like and want safety, security, certainty and predictability. It destroys anxiety.

I wish they would have/hope they do talk about the possibility of the lack of presence during s*x without love being due to dehumanization of women…because I don’t think that feeling of fantasizing about other people is a universal one. Many people would feel a connection with a partner that isn’t love, and still feel present during s*x.
