This video is currently claimed by Miramax, so despite my clever ad breaks, I am not making money on this one yet. Hopefully the claim gets lifted in the next three weeks. Until then, enjoy my salt.
So in the lore the engineer is the demon that created the cenobites out of boredom and thats why he wants HIS puzzle box back. Theres super deep lore to the series also this and most of the sequels are not originally meant to be hellraiser movies
A number of the Hellraiser direct to video sequels involve characters trapped in their minds, going through time loops, etc. This seems to me to violate the sheer physicality of the horror on display in earlier Hellraiser films.
I love the og Hellraiser so much, but dear god, did the sequels get silly fast lol. Definitely that sense of 1980s goofy schlock that Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th had but like… less caring
Almost all latter-day Hellraiser movies are scripts reworked from an "original" concept into a Hellraiser sequel, and this one certainly seems to fit that mold.
Feels like a trite "detective investigating a killer that he is" story just had some cenobites and the Lament Configuration grafted onto it, I think the reveal was probably going to be that Joseph was the Engineer all along, but it was a "dissociated personality" from his bad childhood because that's where pop-psychology was post-Se7en and Fight Club.
l think Clive Barker, disowned these films, after the third film,l liked the second one ,most, some of the hospital scenes were too bare and relatable? also, l thought Aahley lqwrence was so good ,too.
Wait…wasn't the Engineer a character from the first movie? One of the hell creatures? He's one of the scariest monsters…if not for the clearly visible trolly behind him.
It doesn't feel much like the original movie, or the clive barker story, but I enjoy it as a thing that doesn't need to be either of those things. It is at least somewhat logically consistent with the lore, Doug Bradley was pinhead, the visual effects for the hell-stuff were consistent with what I'd come to expect from the 1st and 2nd movies, and a crooked pig gets sent to hell because he couldn't understand that being a piece of shit to everyone around him was bad. Where is the issue? You wanted it to be the 1st movie? Why? The 1st movie already existed.
I remember an interview with Pinhead actor Doug Bradley from the earlier 90s where he's asked about Clive Barker's dismay at all the "Hellraiser" sequels, and Bradley basically says he doesn't care as long as he (Bradley) is getting paid.
So he deserves a big part of the blame for what's happened to the series.
I kinda love this awful movie. Maybe only in retrospect after watching them all. Inferno at least has cool Cenobite design and smart twists. Hellseeker in particular is Inferno but uncreative and boring to watch. Inferno is no masterpiece but I found it very enjoyable in its blue toned, dated way.
the engineer was the name of the 5th cenobyte in the book the first movie was based on, but I was disappointed when in this movei it was nothing lol. also you can tell that after hellraiser 4 all of these movies' scripts started as something else and then they thought "hey lets add pinhead to the story"
If you read The Hellbound Heart the references to The Engineer make more and less sense, since in the book Pinhead and The Engineer are two separate cynobites, and also both women.
I am pretty sure they made this movie as a crime movie then added Hellraiser and friends after the fact. This is a common thing in cinema as a way for the movie company, Miramax, to keep the rights to the characters.
I think the whole Engineer talk was referencing the Engineer in the Hellbound Heart, who is this sort of otherworldly entity that the other Cenobites revere. Weird that they just did nothing with it. XP
weird watchin this video and only after watching nightbreed and recognizing the main actor as being in this film. One good clive barker movie and one tangentially vaguely related to clive barker shit fest years later. poor guy.

Watching this it feels like this would have made a great graphic novel. Something about it also feels like the Max Payne narrative. The comic book aesthetic would definitely help to soften the clichΓ©s, even to appeal to a younger audience who might not be as saturated by them.
