Deer also will eat baby birds, bones, and other infant animals that are in reach for calcium and other minerals that the deer can't get in their diet. It's called osteophagia. Osteo- meaning bone. Phagia/phage- meaning eater/devourer. So not even the other animals are safe!

i think the issue with avalon is that avalon is a city.

and while i love and adore cities, city people put a lot of stock in animals like deer that are literally a dime a dozen.

im from the mountains 2 hrs from la. we have deer in our yard every day. a few years ago a doe gave birth under one of our trees two years in a row (until we got a big dog)

like YES they're so cute, but they're invasive. if they want to see deer just go to the mainland, they're literally everywhere

and i understand it sounds callous but growing up in the mountains you learn how fragile ecosystems are. i remember when thistle was a major problem. i remember people changing from planting whatever to california specific wildflowers

we shake our heads at the people who move to the top of the mountain and complain about coyotes and bears

we have a responsibility to the land we occupy and frankly it's selfish for the people on catalina to dictate how the ecology should be sustained. especially over a mule deer the most populous large herbivore on the west coast

Have the endemic species considered that they had millions of years to evolve to be cuter but they were slacking while the deer were cutemaxxing

The best thing about the pigs is that they werent cane toads, as was done in Hawaii and Australia.

Some friends of mine had their honeymoon at Catalina. They had a blast!!!

Let the poor people hunt again! First the pigs were killed off then the goat, now the deer, killing wasn't a problem on the island, it may have been a problem when it comes to the abalone the lobster, but poor people need to eat too, and it sucks that if you never eat meat unless you kill it yourself, thats how it used to be on the island. but now the food is illegal to kill, and have become a problem.

i remember the exact event that shifted my perspective on hunting– i've always loved animals since i was a little kid, and my uncle (back then) hunted recreationally, which i thought was mean/bad/evil/unnecessary. i thought hunters were bad guys for killing innocent animals. then for an english class i had to interview someone about a topic and write a persuasive essay; i decided i would write about why hunting is bad, and interviewed my uncle about it. he explained to me how because fewer wolves where we live (because of humans killing them) there are too many deer, and they need something to keep the population in check otherwise they'll out-compete every other species. he told me some of the guys he hunts with don't get paid very much at their jobs, and they use the meat they kill to feed their families. that conversation gave me an entirely new perspective on hunting, and i ended up completely changing the argument of my essay.

i like what was said in the video about how conservation isn't about protecting every individual animal, it's about making the necessary choices to support/protect the ecosystem as a whole.
