The "Fantastic Max" theme has lived rent-free in my head since it first aired on ABC on Saturday mornings.
I'm 43 now.

I just learned that I watched too many cartoons as a kid! I knew almost all those! Haha

I know Kidd Video (it was great) Pole Position, Monchichi (Caveman Labubu?), Galaxy High School was cool, Camp Candy (was it before or after the Great Outdoors?), Get along Gang, and briefly Saber Rider. …. after watching a bit, Pandamonium. I remember it and I had the board game as well.

I definitely watched Gilligan's Planet. At one point, they got stranded on an island on that planet.

As a kid I remember turning on Nickelodeon, hoping Bananaman would come on. Sadly, it rarely did

Dude! I can still sing the “Fantastic Max” theme song by heart! I’ve never heard of the other ones.
Since it aired on Sunday mornings on Fox (before the NFL co opted it) there was less competition.

For having only 7 episodes, some part of my brain has never forgotten* the opening to Wolf Rock TV. Absolutely no idea why.

It's weird that we got to Tier 5 before I finally got shows I had actually seen: Queen Emeraldas and Bananaman.

I totally remember this show and really liked it as a little kid, I was like 4-5 years old and would have never thought of Fantastic Max again if it hadn't been for this short segment.
😄👍

I always forget Batman The Animated Series was a FOX thing as opposed to a WB thing.
I vividly remember the TV commercials advertising the show and it's new or special episodes.
I think maybe the reruns were on Kid's WB and with that being more recent than the original airing it stuck as a WB show.

I have really only seen Bananaman out of these shows, I suppose it's European production meant it could easily be shopped around to our countries… but man. The breadth of stuff that was available, and some of it even looking like it could have been fun if it was allowed to live. Truly was a different time… though I feel like the Wolfman Jack tv-show should have made that discjockey into an actual wolfman. Rude Dog feels like it was the most Poochy-thing to ever Poochie, attitude without substance, and I REALLY would like to see Sports Billy and Little Clowns of Happy Town just to see if they are as vapid as they are described here.
@MrBeardsley
August 15, 2026 at 1:42 am
Are we sure Little Clowns of Happytown actually existed as a TV show and isn’t just something from an analog horror project?
@chuck80y
August 15, 2026 at 1:42 am
I remember most of these. Many I only saw one to three episodes before I couldn’t find them due to scheduling changes or cancellation. Back then I was too young to know how the tv guide worked.

In order of increasing Prominence to me (Least to most, that is):
1) I had wondered about Maxie's World, it kinda turned up on UK TV fully formed, with no rhyme or reason.
2) Bananaman was voiced (at least for all the male characters) by British Comedy troupe and alumni of the famous Cambridge University Footlights society, The Goodies. Being of course, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Bill Oddie and Doctor Graeme Garden. Bonus Fact, as of the writing of this comment, Dr Garden is the last surviving Member. Bananaman would eventually find his way, at least in his comic-book incarnation, all the way to the heights of DC Thomson's The Dandy, sister Comic to their equally Famous The Beano, home of the British Dennis the Menace, an entirely Different character to the American Dennis, and if I may say, far more of a Menace. The British Dennis counts Mark Hamill himself among his fans!
3) Possibly excluded for not being a Cartoon, but still somewhat adjacent, Creator of Mazinger/Tranzor Z Go Nagai also created Thunderbirds-style puppet action Series X Bomber, which was Translated into English as Star Fleet, whose music was written and performed by Paul Bliss of the Hollies, and whose Ending theme was Memorably covered by Brian May and Eddie Van Halen. The Star Fleet Project was recently remastered and can be found here on Youtube.
Also: I remember that in some parts of the UK, ITV would occasionally air episodes of the Mediterranean show "La Linea", a cartoon about a line-based character warring with his animator. I highly doubt that any episodes were actually produced in the 1980s though.

I feel like I remember several of these better than ones from previous tiers. Bionic Six was great (in my memory, anyway). Definitely remember Bananaman. Not only did I watch Fantastic Max but I randomly rewatched the first episode a few weeks ago, and BOY does that not hold up.

Was "Ovide and the Gang" not obscure and shouldn't have made this list or was it too obscure, passing under the radar of the creators to have made the list?
@RanninRavensight
August 15, 2026 at 1:42 am
Dinosaucers is my favorite obscure cartoon. I've never met anyone that knew what I was talking about.
The theme song is awesome and the dinosaurs are not accurate. It's okay, clearly was going for style over substance. What a style, though.

August 15, 2026 at 1:42 am
Of all those, in my country I've watched Bionis Six, Little Wizards, Paw Paws (I loved their Totem "mecha"), Rude Dog was awesome and weird in a good way, and Mighty Orbots was aired until the late 90s.
As for Mazinger, we've got dubs from the original thing instead of an "kid's friendly as per USA" adaptation.

The only one I seen was Bionic Six. Not surprising, since I grew up without cable.

I'll have to check the other tier list, but no mention of "SuperTed" or "The Little Prince", both localized imports that played on American tv? Maybe that's a sub-tier, lol. 😅
@JagoHazzard
August 15, 2026 at 1:42 am
Bananaman was way more prominent here in the UK, partly because it featured the voices of the Goodies and a similar absurdist style of humour. The comic is still going and there was even a musical.
